A Taste of Vietnam in the Heart of Lihue

Finding a reliable bowl of comfort on Kauai can be a challenge, but Pho Kauai brings a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to Vietnamese cuisine right to the center of Lihue. Stepping inside, you are greeted by the sharp, fragrant steam of anise and cinnamon rising from large stock pots—a scent that instantly promises a long-simmered broth.

The Broth-First Experience

The menu centers on the craft of the soup, where the beef broth is clear, nuanced, and poured piping hot over delicate rice noodles. Locals often head here for a quick lunch, especially when the tropical humidity gives way to the breezy, cooler afternoons common in this part of the island. The signature bowls come packed with generous portions of thinly sliced rare beef and brisket, meant to be customized with the provided platter of fresh Thai basil, crunchy bean sprouts, and lime wedges.

Local Vibe and Practical Notes

The space is functional and relaxed, catering to residents and visitors who prioritize flavor over pretense. It is a casual spot where the clatter of chopsticks and the hum of neighborhood conversation fill the room. A small word of advice for those driving through the area: parking can be a bit of a tight squeeze during the midday rush, as the spot is well-known to the local working crowd. If you are looking for a hearty, authentic meal that hits the spot without the fanfare of resort dining, this Lihue staple is the place to be.

I really wanted to love this place based on all the hype, but it ended up being pretty underwhelming. The broth lacked that deep, complex flavor I look for in a good bowl of soup, and the noodles were a bit overcooked for my taste. It was also quite noisy inside, which made it hard to just sit back and enjoy the meal. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit again when there are other options nearby.

Vietnamese delight! I have been coming here for years. Owners and workers always changing but the food is consistently great. Reasonably priced and overwhelmingly tasty. The oxtail soup is my go to dish, always contented after devouring quite quickly. Broth has a fragrant smell of anise and Thai basil; with fresh veggies, chili peppers, lime and savory broth.

Ambiance is basic. Simple chairs and tables. Service was prompt. Choices on menu included vegan options. Pho broth was full of flavor. Pork and shrimp spring rolls were ok. Pork vermicelli was well seasoned.

My favorite Pho spot on island, the service is amazing and the place is super clean. I always get the #14 and it never disappoints. The wait time to be seated isn’t usually long and the food is served pretty quick as well. Love this place and highly recommend!

This was a good lunch option for us before flying out of Lihue. We ordered the fried rice with grilled shrimp and another one with Tofu and vegetables. The shrimp & veggies were very fresh and the fried rice tasted yummy with not much oil in it! Will definitely recommend.

We had a Pho with Meatballs and Steak and a papaya salad, it was good the papaya salad is not spicy at all. The pho was very tasty. They are fast in serving. Location is small. The server was nice. Overall its good.

Small restaurant. Appears to be pretty busy might be because there’s just not much pho option on the island. Service was okay. Everything is so fast and the waiter was constantly running back and worth and shouting things out. Once we got our orders, we never saw the waiter again. Good was okay. Pho was different than mainland pho that I’ve had. The broth was thicker, more oily, and the meat was thicker cut, not as tendered. The spring roll I got was not bad. The ends were dried, this is how you know it’s not freshly made, most remade, wrapped, and stored. Good sauce. Will I go back? Mixed feelings. I want to say No but as I said earlier, there’s not much pho options on the island.

I had such a great experience at Pho Kauai! The food was absolutely delicious — the broth for the pho was rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The portions were generous, and everything tasted fresh. The service was warm and friendly, and the staff made sure we felt welcome from the moment we walked in. The restaurant has a cozy, relaxed atmosphere that made it a perfect spot for a casual meal. If you’re craving authentic, comforting Vietnamese food on Kauai, this is the place to go. Highly recommend!
