Local Flavors of the Garden Isle

Stepping into Paradise Grinds & Catering brings you right into the heart of Lihue's working-lunch culture. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is where locals go for honest, no-nonsense Hawaiian comfort food. The air inside carries the savory scent of slow-cooked kalua pork and the sweet, lingering aroma of freshly made haupia, grounding you firmly in the island rhythm.

A Taste of Home-Style Cooking

The menu leans heavily into the plate lunch tradition that defines Kauai dining. You will find generous portions of crispy chicken katsu and succulent beef stew that tastes exactly like a home-cooked family meal. Chef-driven passion shines through in their catering operations, which often feature their signature bento-style setups perfect for beach days or business meetings around the Lihue Civic Center area.

The Lihue Experience

Expect a bustling, high-energy environment during the midday rush. While the space is compact, the turnover is quick, making it a reliable spot for those who need a substantial meal without the long wait. A small observation for visitors: parking in this part of town can get tight during peak hours, so plan to arrive just before the noon whistle blows to snag a spot easily.

Whether you are a local picking up a quick bite before heading to the airport or a traveler looking to skip the tourist traps, this spot offers a raw, unfiltered look at what people in Kauai actually eat on a Tuesday afternoon. It is efficient, flavorful, and keeps things simple with recipes that prioritize texture and seasoning over flash.

Very nice fried chicken! The best taste we had on this island. Big plate and reasonable price.

We took the Chicken Katsu on our first visit, which was delicious and a huge portion. We decided to come back for the lunch box. We shared one - it was also very good. The staff was very friendly 😊

We stopped here to have a quick dinner before going straight to the airport. The food was really good. the portion was crazy we still got some leftovers that we ate at the airport. the malasadas to me was the best that we had in Kauai. if we going back in Kauai we will definitely comeback to eat here again.

Really generous portion of food. We got the chili propane chicken and teri chicken - they were enough for two meals! I really liked the idea of the lunch box and it’s only $14.95! However, I wish the chicken was cut to smaller and fried not too hard, as they were really hard to chew. Also, the fried chicken were kind of salty. Cash or Venmo only for dinner

We tried two lunch plates here! Teri fried chicken was our favorite, but the chicken katsu was extremely tender. Staff was very friendly and even let us change our order (we didn’t understand the regular vs deluxe vs played lunch). Also chatted with an older gentleman that works there about his time on the mainland! The food was so good that even once I got full, I took my leftovers with me to the airport!

It has been hard to find really good Hawaiian food for a good price on the island, and this hit the spot! Super delicious, with a large plethora of plates to choose from. Reasonably priced with large portion sizes. Great service. Our group ordered the garlic shrimp, katsu chicken, chili chicken, and it was all incredible. Would definitely go back!

First time for us, and i would definitely come back. Box lunch for $11.95, even though small portions, it hit the spot. The food was good. Next time, we will try the deluxe box for $13.95. Took it to the airport and grinded it. I recommend this place.

Great taste and value! Really wanted a box lunch but if you come 15 minutes before closing, only get what get. Very happy with the chili pepper chicken we got. So much we were able to share a plate between 2 of us. There’s a picnic bench that we were able to sit down and use. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Edit: went back 3 days later to get my box lunch. Went early too.

KUDOs. (1) Simple menu: two box lunches with assorted items, Regular or Deluxe, plus 4-5 daily specials featuring one item. The Deluxe box lunch is stuffed in a pie box, not the smaller bento box. (2) Nice assortment of local favorites flavored just-right (many other places use a lot of salt). (3) Low price for lots of food. Similar on Oahu would easily be $20+. (4) Boiled peanuts: tasty and crunchy; we regretted buying only 1 serving. (5) Delightful customer service: friendly, patient, willing to share information about places to visit, routes, traffic. CHALLENGEs. (1) Easy to miss location; it's in a row of houses. Look for the school sign across the street, "Kauai Campus. McKinley Community School for Adults." (2) Your meal is cooked when you order so it is served hot and fresh. This is definitely not a instant in-and-out place but it is well worth the wait (and the wait isn't long). We had planned to order and eat in the car while driving. Instead, we ate there and enjoyed 20 minutes of hospitality; this was one of the highlights of our trip. Paradise Grinds is very highly recommended!

They only have one long table for outdoor seating, but this place seems like the locals' favorite. I see many orders multi box lunches. You have to go to the back of the store for the breathtaking view (hopefully we didn't intrude on private properties). The deluxe box lunch is the best deal for less than $14, lots of food, so I can see why the locals love this place.
