Mauka Sushi
About
Freshness from the Lihue Coast
Tucked away from the typical tourist trails, Mauka Sushi brings a refined approach to the raw fish scene in Lihue. The air here carries the faint, clean scent of ocean salt and seasoned vinegar, setting the stage for plates that prioritize local sourcing over flash. Unlike the bustling resort hubs, this spot maintains a quiet, steady hum of patrons who know exactly what they are here for: pristine ahi and perfectly tempered shari.
The Omakase Experience
If you prefer to leave the decisions to the experts, the omakase offerings here showcase the day's best catch. You will likely find buttery cuts of bigeye tuna and local snapper, prepared with a minimalist touch that allows the quality of the fish to stand alone. The texture of the rice is a standout—warm, slightly firm, and seasoned with just enough vinegar to cut through the richness of the fatty fish. It is an ideal stop for solo diners or couples looking for a focused, high-quality meal without the distraction of loud music.
A Few Things to Know
The space is intentionally intimate, which means seats fill up fast during the lunch rush. While the limited parking in this pocket of Kauai can be a minor hurdle, the effort is justified by the caliber of the sashimi. Whether you are grabbing a quick box to take to the beach or sitting at the counter to watch the steady, precise blade work of the chefs, Mauka Sushi remains a bedrock for those who value authentic craft in the heart of the island.

A bit pricey but GREAT fresh seafood from this counter in the marketplace! Tried out the Ahi Poke bowl and Ahi roll. Roll was especially great with fresh avocado, veggies, etc!

We LOVED the poke here! We visited once, then the next day we took a food tour that stopped here, and we actually came back again later that day. The Gorilla bowl is the best, and they give amazing service. Makai is located in the grocery store, and is well worth the visit. The entire grocery store is family owned, so please support the small business!

The poke bowl was super fresh. The only issue we had was trying to figure out what was in the poke bowl… what was the Godzilla option and what was in the hapa.

We used to go to this place when they were in Poipu…for our money, it’s still the best sushi and poke on the island! This new location is a bit off the beaten path, but it’s totally worth the trip. Everything is unbelievably fresh and delicious, and the staff could not be friendlier. Seating is limited, but it’s easy to take it to-go and eat at a nearby park/beach.

Oh man what a find! Last day at Kauai and finally had a chance to eat sushi! Christian, the one who took our order, was so helpful and really takes cares of his customers. Sushi here is fantastic, must try!

Tasty, fresh sushi and poke. Great stop after ATV or zip line at Kipu Ranch. We were so hungry and did not disappoint. We had the Godzilla poke bowl, salmon dynamite and sushi roll. Small place but worth the visit. Plenty of choices from poke bowls, sushi burritos and sushi rolls. Our first great meal on the island. Serves soda, water and juice (no alcohol). Opens until 3pm. Check them out!!

The Ahi poke bowl was potentially the best meal we had while we were in Hawaii for 2 weeks. Incredibly fresh and delicious! Make Makai Sushi a must during your time in Kaua'i. You won't regret it!!

Had the gorilla bowl - simply amazing. The combination of having salmon, ahi, and ono all in one bowl is such a good idea. What differentiates this poke bowl from other places is it's made to order - they make it right when you order it. Additionally, the variety of toppings they include (such as avocado) make this much more than just fish and rice. Definitely on the pricier side, but it won't disappoint.

Had the gorilla bowl and highly recommend! My wife loves poke and has eaten her fair share and she gave a five out of five. Trust me, this is a BIG deal. She is hard to please. Staff was very helpful and friendly as well. The rest of the market had some nice finds, including Thai food and the juice store in the back as well as the shaved ice cart in front.

Small little sushi and poke joint hiding inside a small supermarket on the side of the road. There is a small sign outside so it’s easy to overlook if you aren’t paying attention. Parking lot is small and fills fast. All that being said, you don’t want to miss out on this place. Amazing food. Fresh and delicious. We had the Gorilla Poke Bowl and a California roll. Both were excellent. The poke was some of the best I’ve ever eaten and fresh as can be. The California roll was the same. (See pictures) The staff at Makai Sushi were attentive and helpful with people ordering. They kept everyone apprised of possible wait times before getting their food. They made great suggestions regarding the orders. And they were a lot of fun talking with everyone ordering and waiting. High quality food from a hidden gem. Make the visit. It’s worth it.
