Kim Chee Restaurant No 9
About
A Taste of Seoul in the Heart of Kauai
When you find yourself roaming the central streets of Lihue, Kim Chee Restaurant No 9 serves as a straightforward, no-frills destination for those craving genuine Korean soul food. This isn't a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is where locals go for hearty portions and the pungent, unmistakable aroma of fermented chili and garlic that defines a proper kitchen.
The Flavors of the Islands
The menu highlights traditional preparations that have become staples in the Kauai dining scene. The signature kim chee stew arrives bubbling, bringing a sharp, spicy heat that cuts through the humidity of a tropical afternoon. You will notice the rhythmic clatter of metal utensils against ceramic bowls and the occasional hum of a busy kitchen crew managing the lunch rush. It is a loud, communal environment where the focus remains entirely on the plate.
Practical Dining in Lihue
If you are planning a visit, keep in mind that the lot can get cramped during the peak midday hours, so a little patience while parking is part of the routine. The interior keeps things simple with functional seating, making it an ideal stop for a quick, filling lunch after running errands in town. It is best suited for diners who prioritize bold, fermented flavors and generous servings over polished aesthetics. Whether you are a regular or just passing through the center of the island, this spot offers a reliable, unvarnished look at Korean culinary influence within the local Lihue community.

They clearly need more help, but the food was definitely worth the wait. Will go there again when we visit Kauai. Some of the best food ever!

We had the lunch special which includes meat jun, bbq chicken, gyoza, mac salad, pickle cabbage with a bowl of white rice. Kim chee on side included with meal. Tasty and filling for the price. It was quite busy for only 2 workers, waiter/cashier and cook but they handled it sufficiently. This place is conveniently located at Kukui Grove Shopping Center, close to the food court, across from Ross with plenty of parking.

Not nearly as good as Kim Chee 2 in Waialae Avenue. One condiment. No veggies. Tastes like Drive Inn food dining g in.

Kalbi ribs are delicious. Shrimp tempura is okay. Kimchee is delicious but comes in a tiny cup. Portions aren't great. See photos.. this was $28

I mean...if you were out in the wilderness and finally made it back to civilization...you would love the food here. I had the lunch special and I thought it was mediocre at best. Here is how I rate my meal from best to worst: 1) root beer 2) short ribs 3) plain white rice 4) chicken katsu 5) macaroni salad- macaroni noodles smothered with mayonnaise, disqualified after the first bite 6) Lettuce- automatically disqualified, it was just plain ol' lettuce. Not only was the food mediocre, but the decor was outdated, like from the late 1980s.

Please!! If you’re reading this, DO NOT TRY this place. The quality and flavor of food is VERY low. I ordered a $16 bowl of ramen and was served “instant $1.69” ramen from Walmart. Everything else was bland and low quality ingredients. Besides the names on the menu, nothing tasted Korean. Again, do not waste your money here.

Fast and friendly service! Kim chee and soup were very good. However, Bibimbap didn't impress me. It's ok taste, though.
