A Sweet Slice of Lihue Heritage

Walking into Kauai Bakery, you are immediately greeted by the warm, caramelized scent of butter and sugar lingering in the air. This isn’t just another stop for a quick bite; it is a local institution that anchors the morning routine for many living in the heart of Lihue. The modest storefront acts as a gateway to traditional Hawaiian-style baking, where the display cases are packed with items that define the island's unique culinary fusion.

Signature Island Flavors

The star of the show here is undoubtedly the malasadas. These pillowy, golden-fried Portuguese doughnuts are served warm and dusted with just the right amount of sugar. You will also find a rotation of Chantilly cake, which brings a rich, nutty macadamia flavor profile that is distinct to this part of the island. The crusts on their fruit turnovers are consistently flaky, shattering into golden shards at the first bite, a sign of high-quality lamination work performed by bakers who have been perfecting their craft for years.

The Local Experience

Expect a functional, no-frills environment where the focus stays squarely on the quality of the dough. It is a bustling spot during the early hours, so be prepared for a bit of a line that spills toward the door, and keep in mind that parking in this busy section of town can occasionally be a game of patience. It is the perfect place to grab a box of pastries before heading out to the north shore or settling in for a quiet morning near the harbor. Whether you are a long-time resident looking for a taste of home or a visitor eager to try a local staple, the integrity of these classic recipes makes every calorie count.

This is one of our favorite stops when visiting Kauai! We ordered original, nutella, and ube malasadas along with the Ensymada. Everything tasted so fresh and yummy! We dug in so fast I didn’t get a pic! Update 11/8/25: Ordered the Ube and cinnamon malasadas as well as the Ube Cream Cheese turnover. Not sure why because we had just eaten breakfast. We knew we could not pass up this chance! We were NOT disappointed! Kauai Bakery always hits right! So proud to get a pic to share!!

The malasadas were really good, we tried the ube, coconut, and cinnamon sugar, they were all delicious. Best malasadas on Kauai!

The coconut latte was rich, smooth, and full of flavor, and the coconut pastry was fresh and amazing. Such a great spot with tasty treats and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend!

It was raining when we stopped by, and there was no seating available. Although they had plenty of malasadas, they tasted slightly stale for the morning. The dough itself was decent, but the ube and guava fillings weren’t as flavorful or as generous as those at Passion Bakery Cafe.

Went here very early in the morning before setting out on a hiking day. There was no wait at this time. The ube Masada was excellent - had a great subtle sweet flavor and lots of cream (got kind of messy because of this but I didn’t mind). Coffee was just alright. The baked goods are what to get here.

I brought my parents here to try their malasadas based on the good reviews. We tried the mango and passionfruit malasadas and they were okay. I have tried better quality where they are warm and fresh. Not sure if I would recommend or return again.

I bought these during my vacation and brought them back to North Carolina. Even after three days, they still taste great and have a good texture. I always buy their malasadas whenever I visit Kauai. Their customer service is excellent — everyone is friendly, smiling, and very helpful to guests.

We were looking for some malasadas and found kauai bakery. We went on a Tuesday morning and there was no line. We got 8 malasadas and 2 manapuas. The ham and cheese manapua was good, but the pizza one was better. For the malasadas we got oreo, nutella, ube, lilioki, pumpkin spice, haupia, guava, and mango. They were all generously filled to the brim and fresh. The best ones were the pumpkin spice, lilioki and Nutella. The rest were good just not as strong of flavors. They had other unique pastries we didnt try but looked fantastic. Definitely check this place out for unique malasada flavors!

We tried out many of the different malasadas and really enjoyed them all! The ube (the purple one) was my favorite and I would say is a must try! I also tried the macadamia nut latte - really good but definitely a sweeter coffee drink. We were able to stop by when there was no line but we unfortunately did feel rushed by the staff. Besides that, we had a great experience!

These were the best malasadas I've ever had!! My favorite was the ube. The lilikoi chiffon was amazing as well. The were light and airy with the perfect amount of filling. We had samples of their mochi brownies and they were fantastic!! Hit this place up and head to Lydgate beach for a sunrise. You won't be disappointed
