Happy Eats - Huli Chicken & Ribs
About
The Scent of Kiawe Smoke in Lihue
If you find yourself wandering near the heart of Lihue, follow your nose toward the unmistakable, deep aroma of kiawe wood smoke. Happy Eats - Huli Chicken & Ribs has carved out a reputation for being the go-to roadside stop for authentic, slow-cooked Hawaiian barbecue. The atmosphere is unpretentious and built for those who prefer their lunch served on paper plates with a side of island sunshine.
The Art of the Huli
The signature here is, without question, the huli chicken. It is marinated in a traditional, secret-recipe glaze that strikes that tricky balance between sweet and savory. You will watch the chicken rotate over the grill until the skin achieves a perfect, caramelized char. The ribs follow suit, falling off the bone with a smoky finish that proves why this spot is a staple for locals. Expect a simple setup—don't come looking for white tablecloths; come looking for the best plate lunch you will find on the east side of Kauai.
Local Tips for Your Visit
One thing to keep in mind is the island pace. Service is straightforward and friendly, but the kitchen focuses on quality over speed. There is limited seating on-site, so many diners opt to grab their boxes to-go and head toward a nearby beach park. If the wind is blowing just right, you will smell the smoke from the parking lot before you even see the stand, making it impossible to pass by without ordering a half-chicken or a rack of ribs. It is the kind of authentic Lihue experience that feels earned, not manufactured.

Food was absolutely amazing! The best food I had during the trip. Portions were large and prices are very reasonable. As of 5/23/26, they were in the Walmart parking lot and not the address on Google. I think the Google address is an old location and it just has not been updated.

The best huli2x chicken in Oahu. Also, our fellow cebuanos were the ones grilling the chicken outside the restaurant, you know for sure that its good and will taste like the ones at home. Highly recommend this place and will definitely come back for more!

Bonkers good—seriously some of the juiciest chicken ever. The pineapple white sauce is absolute heaven, and the lychee guava sauce on the ribs? OMG. Such a fun spot to grab BBQ on a hot day, especially since you can watch the food cook right in front of you. The mochi butter cake was also incredible. So glad I tried this place—the portions for the price are honestly really, really good.

DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS GEM. Island BBQ at its best right outside airport in Lihue. Super nice family runs this roadside BBQ on Saturday's. The owner is a chef at the Grand Hyatt. Amazing ribs and chicken. Try to spicy water sauce. Must stop. Open SATURDAY AND SUNDAYS only.

I wish I could add a picture of our food, but we ate it too quickly to share! This was definitely the BEST meal we had on Kaua’i this trip. My husband got the chicken mini plate and I ordered the à la carte half rack of ribs and both were incredible. My husband said “I hold order that again right now!” 🤣 Thank you for the great meal, we will be dreaming of this until next year!!

This is among the best food I've had in Hawaii. If you go to Lihue on your trip and you're there on a Saturday or Sunday, make plans for lunch here, you WILL NOT be disappointed. Important to note I was there in late January 2025 and they told us that was their last weekend in the walmart parking lot and they were having to find a different location. Check their instagram to see where they relocate to, they told us they'd provide updates there. The prices are great, the service is fast, and the flavors are Parts Unknown level incredible. I had their marinated chicken with guava bbq sauce and it was unbelievably good. The marinade was flavorful just eating the chicken by itself which was tender, moist, and perfectly cooked. The guava bbq sauce elevated it to a level I can't describe, you have to try it for yourself. It's a cash only operation so come prepared. Super polite and caring family that runs it and they really care about providing you with great food that they clearly take a lot of pride in.

Best ribs of my entire life. They’re moist, tender, and the rub is out of this world. We went once and had to come back the very next day. The chicken is delicious as well, and the fried pork is amazing. It pairs perfectly with their homemade lemonades.

Easy to get to with plenty of parking, ie walmart parking lot. Both chicken and ribs were moist, tender, and flavorful. Way better than competition (CIB). Service was fast and friendly since we were the 2nd one there when it first opened.

Food: We got the Happy Plate to try a bit of everything. The ribs are very tasty and flavorful. Between marinated and dry chicken, the latter one is more salty, but both of them go well with the chili water. It’s such a refreshing flavor! Service: very sweet ladies help us with orders. Ambiance: they are a good stand in the parking lot, so the sun was a bit stinging.
