A Taste of Maui Sugar

When you find yourself wandering the sunny shores of South Maui, Sweet Hula serves as a quick, satisfying pitstop for those craving a nostalgic island snack. Located right in the heart of Kihei, this spot captures the laid-back essence of a beach-side confectionary. The scent of caramelized sugar and fresh-baked dough greets you before you even cross the threshold, providing a welcome break from the salt-sprayed afternoon heat.

The Experience

The space is modest and utilitarian, designed for grabbing a treat before heading back to the nearby beaches at Kamaole. You won't find white-tablecloth service here; instead, expect the gentle hum of island chatter and the occasional whir of a blender. It’s an ideal spot for families or solo travelers looking to indulge in local sweets without the fuss of a formal sit-down meal.

Local Nuances

Be prepared for the parking situation, which can be a bit of a dance during peak afternoon hours. However, once you snag a spot, the selection of treats makes the effort worthwhile. Whether you are looking for a quick sugar fix or a local dessert staple, the menu leans into Hawaiian-inspired flavors that pair perfectly with the tropical climate. It’s a straightforward, unpretentious stop that locals rely on when the sweet tooth kicks in midway through a Kihei excursion.

That açai bowl was really tasty. We got the one with mango and strawberries, which were delicious. I would say my only complaint is that the bowl is pretty pricey. I get it. It’s fresh fruit and such but it was just a little bit too much for me.

After a morning of nude body surfing at little beach, a cool and delicious açaí bowl was the only thing that was gonna hit the spot. I used to live in brasil, so I can be a little picky with my açaí, but once I discovered that the owner was Brazilian, I had zero hesitation. The bowls were full, fresh, and fantastic. And the açaí wasn’t watered down or thinned out with fruit juice like a lot of places do. We also tried the cheese bread (pão de queijo), and if you’ve ever had it, give it a try! The texture is chewy and light, with lots of stretch, and are packed with cheesy flavor. And they’re gluten free! Sweet Hula served up one of the best açaí bowls I’ve ever had. Mahalo, gente. Muito obrigado.

What separates good acai bowls from great ones is the base imo. The toppings are more or less the same. The base here is really delicious in an interesting way. It's not just sweet but has floral notes to it which we really enjoyed. 10/10!
