Coconuts Fish Cafe - Azeka
About
A Kihei Staple for Fresh Catch
When you find yourself cruising through South Maui, the distinct scent of blackened mahi-mahi and searing tropical spices signals you have arrived at Coconuts Fish Cafe in the Azeka Shopping Center. This isn't your typical sit-down white tablecloth establishment; it is a bustling, high-energy counter service spot where the line often stretches toward the door, fueled by locals and visitors alike who know exactly what they are here for.
The Fish Taco Legend
The main draw is undeniably their signature fish tacos. Chef Barry Gutman crafted a recipe that avoids the soggy trap of many island eateries by using a proprietary seventeen-ingredient seasoning blend and a generous topping of fresh, crunchy mango salsa. The fish is seared to perfection—flaky, opaque, and incredibly moist—tucked into a warm corn tortilla that provides just enough structure to hold the mountain of cabbage and house-made sauce without crumbling.
Dining in the Heart of Kihei
The atmosphere leans heavily into a casual, open-air beach shack vibe, perfect for shaking off the sand after a morning at the nearby Kamaole beaches. You will hear the lively clatter of trays and the hum of island music playing over the sound of the ceiling fans. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble to find an open table during the lunch rush, as this open-air pavilion fills up fast. It is loud, it is fast-paced, and the parking lot can be a tricky maze during peak tourist hours, but the food arrives quickly enough that the turnover is steady. If you want a genuine taste of Maui’s casual culinary scene, skip the resort buffets and grab a seat here instead.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Kihei and you don’t stop at Coconuts, you’re doing it wrong. Absolute gem of a spot. As someone who knows the island rhythm, this place hits that perfect balance of laid-back local vibe and seriously good food. The fish tacos? Unreal. Fresh, flavorful, and piled high like they actually want you to leave happy. Everything tastes like it was made with care, not just churned out for tourists. But what really made the experience stand out was the people. Manager Pete is an absolute legend—warm, attentive, and the kind of guy who makes you feel like you’ve been coming here for years, even if it’s your first visit. You can tell he genuinely cares about both the guests and the team. Great energy, great food, great people. This is the kind of place you come back to again and again. Mahalo, Coconuts 🤙

From the moment you enter, the very nice service begins. Food was tasty, our 1st visit, would come again & recommend. Came for the fish & chicken tacos, also had the macadamia Mahi, let's say no leftovers.

The service was amazing right from the start, the workers seemed to know all the regulars and made us feel like regulars too. Best fish and pulled pork tacos on the island. Service was quick as well. I could drink the "piggy drizzle sauce" by the gallon and was dissapointed they dont sell it anymore. They sent us home with a large to go container that I put on my eggs every morning.

The fish tacos are a freaking party in your mouth. Every bite was so flavorful and mouthwatering. They're made out of ono and mahi mahi. They were covered with the best coconut coleslaw topped with mango ♡ when I asked a question. The server was beyond polite and very confident in her answer. She made me feel right at home ♡

We arrived here for our dinner. I wanted to try their fish tacos which they’re famous for. We ordered mixed greens salad, coconut shrimp basket and fish tacos. The fish was really well seasoned and cooked. They gave us two big tacos in the order. The shrimp was tasty and crispy with a subtle sweetness. The sweet chili sauce it came with wasn’t that good. However, their tiger sauce present in every table, was fantastic. The fries were really crispy and fresh. The salad was fresh and crunchy. We got the papaya salad dressing which was a mild tasting sauce. They lived up to their name. We enjoyed our visit.

We were here for lunch on Dec 24th. Our first order was the mochiko chicken lunch plate., our daughter loved it. So we decided to eat and ordered macadamia crusted lunch plate and a side order of fries. Mochiko chicken- well made, good quantity of meat, crispy. We subbed teriyaki sauce with their Sriracha house sauce. C9mes with pasta salad not the potatoes and coconut coleslaw Macadamia crusted Mahi- the filet tasted good- it is deepfried- a sprinkling of nuts. But the portion size was extremely small- our filet was drastically thin. I personally felt the price is not worth it. The plate came filled with coconut coleslaw and comparatively a larger serving of rice. The mango pineapple sauce was good. Fries- well seasoned and we're good. Verdict- some dishes are very small portio so for the price. Yesterday for 25 $ we got a much bigger portion of Mahi at the paia fish market. This filet was 1/2 the size at best.

We visited Coconut’s Fish Cafe at the Azeka Shopping Center on December 4th, 2025 around 6:00 PM, and honestly, we had a really nice time. The place was clean the moment we walked in — tables, floors, everything looked well taken care of. It has a simple, relaxed island vibe that makes you feel comfortable right away. The service was quick, and the staff kept things moving smoothly even with a steady flow of people coming in. Our food came out faster than we expected, which was great. We tried the Coconut Shrimp, the Kalua Pork Plate, and the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi Plate, along with Aloha Maid juice, guava nectar, and a soft drink. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were good, and the flavors were light and easy to enjoy. Overall, we walked out happy. It’s a clean spot with fast service, decent flavors, and a laid-back feel a solid choice for a casual dinner in Kihei.
