A South Maui Morning Tradition

If you find yourself waking up as the sun hits the shoreline in Kihei, you will likely see a line wrapping around the corner of the building. Kihei Caffe is a local institution that eschews fancy tablecloths for the scent of freshly griddled macadamia nut pancakes and Kona coffee wafting through the South Maui air. It is loud, busy, and unapologetically casual.

Island Flavors on a Plate

The kitchen here focuses on hearty, portions that prepare you for a full day of surfing or exploring the Road to Hana. Their signature pork fried rice is a savory revelation, often served with a scoop of eggs that satisfies the deepest hunger. If you have a sweet tooth, the banana macadamia nut pancakes are non-negotiable; they arrive golden-brown, buttery, and topped with a generous amount of syrup that makes the early alarm clock worth it.

The Lay of the Land

Located right across from the popular Kalama Park, the restaurant serves as a central hub for beachgoers. Expect the clatter of silverware and the energetic buzz of tourists and locals exchanging surf reports over high-top tables. It is an open-air concept, so do not be surprised if a light breeze carries the sound of crashing waves from the beach just steps away. Parking can be a bit of a localized sport in this bustling stretch of the island, so arriving before the mid-morning rush is the best strategy to snag a spot. It is the kind of place where you leave with a full stomach, a light heart, and a bit of sand on your flip-flops.

The chicken & waffle was ok. The Ube Coconut Latte was a bit bitter. I had to tell them to add whipped cream, which I thought was already included (showed in their drinks pic menu)

Funky umbrella covered streetwise café. Ordering looks time consuming because of the line. But the process, including table delivery of your order is surprisingly fast and efficient. Food was great and the streetside umbrella funk was quite enjoyable. Great find!

This was our very first morning in Maui, and honestly, it couldn’t have been a better way to start the trip. The atmosphere was exactly what you hope for when you land on the island — warm breeze, relaxed vibes, sunshine, and that unmistakable Maui energy 🤟 Even though the café was busy, the service was impressively fast and organized. Our food came out quickly and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and the perfect breakfast to kick off vacation mode. You could tell this place is popular for a reason. And of course… the chickens 😂 The café has signs asking people not to feed them, which makes sense because they definitely know how to work the crowd. Honestly though, we found them hilarious and oddly charming. They wandered around like they owned the place and added a little extra Maui character to the whole experience. Great entertainment with breakfast as far as we were concerned. Overall, this place gave us such a fun and memorable first impression of Maui. Great food, great atmosphere, and exactly the kind of laid-back island breakfast spot you hope to find on vacation.

I never visit restaurants twice unless they’re exceptional, especially when on holiday, but we really loved this place! Big portions & yummy food. So happy this was our first ever loco moco cos it was so yummy!!! First granola we got had mould on it 🥹 otherwise was good. Cinnamon roll was humongous & average. I absolutely loved their breakfast wrap & omg the pickle sauce!!! So good

Love this place. The food was delicious and worth the short wait. I was a little unsure when we first saw the queue but it moved quick and the staff were great at helping us find a seat. We got the corned beef hash and eggs benedict. Recommend. It set us up for the day.

I have been to Maui three times and was fortunate to discover Kīhei Caffe on my first visit years ago. The food is absolutely delicious - I mean really delicious - and love the outdoor seating and overall laid back vibe. Always one my first visits when I come to Maui and it never disappoints!

We were in town and had an amazing breakfast at Kihei Caffe. The breakfast burrito was absolutely stuffed and my kids enjoyed fluffy turtle shaped pancakes. Their cold brew coffee is very good too. Definitely a great place to enjoy breakfast.

Had to come here for the first breakfast in Maui and it was a 10/10¡ Husband loves Eggs Benedict and picked the Kalua Eggs Benedict. Portion size of the pork was actually really large which was quite good. I'm not usually a pork person, so I'm not the best judge, but he loved it! Buttermilk pancakes with banana and macadamia nuts - 10/10! Such super fluffy pancakes and They actually went so well with the bananas and macadamia nuts! I'm not usually a banana or macadamia person, but honestly this combination was delicious! Got some Grilled chicken breast on the side for protein - Nice that they had this option of getting just plain protein on the side. Also got their daily special coconut something coffee! It was a season of item so I don't even remember what it was but it was yum for sure! We came at 9am to beat the crowds and got seated immediately. Service was also very quick! Also got a table outside with a view which was lovely.

Kihei Caffe absolutely lived up to the hype. It’s the kind of breakfast spot where the menu is big, the portions are generous, and somehow everything still comes out tasting amazing. We went all-in and tried a bunch of different things: pancakes, a waffle, biscuits and gravy, pork fried rice, and the loco moco with corned beef — and every single item was a winner. The pancakes and waffle were exactly what you want on vacation (fluffy, satisfying, and comforting), the biscuits and gravy were rich and hearty, and the loco moco with corned beef was a full-on “this is why we came here” kind of plate. Even the pork fried rice held its own — flavorful and a perfect savory counterbalance to the sweeter breakfast stuff. Bottom line: everything was amazing, and Kihei Caffe is absolutely a place I’d go back to any time I’m on Maui.

It is situated right by the ocean. We arrived here for our breakfast and ordered breakfast burrito, oatmeal, cappucino and iced coffee. The burrito and the oatmeal were tasty. The cappuccino was decent as well - both in terms of roast and quantity. The highlight was iced coffee which my wife really enjoyed. A decent place with good food.
