Paia Fish Market Southside
About
A Kihei Staple for Fresh Pacific Catch
When the sea breeze kicks up across South Maui, locals and visitors alike gravitate toward the open-air pavilion of Paia Fish Market Southside. This isn't your typical white-tablecloth establishment; it's a high-energy, order-at-the-counter space where the clang of cutlery and the hum of island conversation create a backdrop for some of the freshest seafood on the island.
The Daily Harvest
The menu acts as a direct reflection of the local fleet’s daily haul. Whether it is ahi, ono, mahimahi, or opah, the fish is consistently handled with a simple approach that lets the quality speak for itself. Most patrons swear by the blackened seasoning—a savory, peppery crust that provides a sharp contrast to the tender, flaky interiors. The portions are notoriously generous, usually served alongside your choice of coleslaw, Cajun rice, or crispy fries.
Island Casual Atmosphere
Stepping off the main road and into this airy hall, you are met with the scent of grilled fish and ocean salt. It’s perfect for families or groups coming directly from the beach, as the seating is communal and the vibe remains consistently laid-back. Be aware that during peak dinner hours, the wait times for a table can stretch, and the noise level rises with the crowd. It is a bustling, no-frills experience that prizes accessibility and freshness above all else. If you find yourself craving a hearty meal after a long day in the Maui sun, the counter-service efficiency here is unmatched, allowing you to focus on the fresh fish rather than formal dining rituals.

This was the most favorite restaurant in kihei, maui. We tried it 4 times. The blackend mahi mahi with potatoes and rice is so good and perfectly cooked with balanced seasoning. The seating area is so cozy and comfortable. I love this place. The pasta was little too cheesy.

Great food and efficient service. We ordered the blackened mahi mahi and the seafood pasta, and both were excellent. The place has a lively atmosphere, but everything runs smoothly. Fresh seafood, great flavors, and a very enjoyable experience.

For a place with "fish" in their name you would expect it to be cooked right... but they're focused on volume and getting orders out. I get that it's a popular place and busy, but Ono flaky firm doesn't mean shoe leather tough. Come on. Service was great, but the food not so much...bland slaw and the Cajun rice and home potatoes were meh... Table was sticky...yuk. For it's popularity I expected better, but it's got to be the lesser expensive meals that bring customers back. I really wanted to like this place, but I have to be honest, tonight they didn't live up to the hipe.

We came around 2 p.m. and missed the lunch rush, so there was no wait, which was nice. We ordered the fish, shrimp, and chicken tacos à la carte, along with the fried shrimp appetizer. The food was tasty overall, but unfortunately, we found a hair in the chicken taco :/ It was disappointing since everything else was quite good.

This has got to be the best meal we had on our weeklong stay in Maui. The flavour is excellent, portions are decent, and fish doneness is perfect. This is a very popular place so expect a lineup — we went for dinner on a Saturday and we lined up for almost an hour. It was worth the wait though.

Ordered two fresh catch plates of sautéed mahi mahi and cajun style pink snapper. Both were delicious and servings were generous. Eaten before realizing no photo evidence of dishes. It’s an order at the counter and find an empty seat kind of casual eatery. Great tasting food and value as well as friendly staff. Parking available in the market behind the restaurant.

Tender, buttery grilled fish. Was absolutely worth the ~30min we waited for it. The best part is all of the fish types and preparation styles. Can't go wrong with any of the Fresh Catch plates. Will definitely have to come back and try more!
