A Maui Favorite for Fresh Sashimi

Tucked away near the sunny shores of South Maui, Miso Phat Sushi brings a no-nonsense approach to high-quality seafood. This spot has earned a loyal following among locals and visitors alike who prefer their fish straight from the Pacific rather than flown in from the mainland. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious; don't expect white tablecloths here. Instead, you'll find a lively, bustling counter where the sound of sharp knives slicing through ahi fills the room.

The Catch of the Day Experience

The culinary philosophy here is simple: if it isn't fresh, it isn't on the menu. Because the owners operate their own fishing boat, the selection changes based on what the crew reels in that morning. You will often see chalkboard updates listing the day's special cuts. The 'Phat' rolls are the real draw, oversized and packed with generous portions of locally sourced ono, ahi, or mahi-mahi. If you are a fan of texture, the crispy rice cakes topped with spicy tuna offer a satisfying crunch that contrasts perfectly with the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth quality of their signature sashimi.

Tips for Visiting

The space is compact, and during the dinner rush, the noise level can climb as conversations bounce off the walls, making it a high-energy environment rather than a place for a quiet, whispered date. Parking in this Kihei shopping complex can get tight once the sunset crowd arrives, so plan to circle the lot a few times or arrive a bit early. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch after a morning session at the beach or settling in for a full omakase-style experience, Miso Phat provides an authentic, ingredient-focused meal that remains a staple of the Kihei dining scene.

This place completely surprised us. It is no frills and seems like it is a random hole in the wall, small restaurant. We were SO impressed!!! Everything we had was 10 out of 10. The rolls are huge and generous. So so so good!!!!!! I would go back every day if I could.

We came in for happy hour because we heard great things about this place online. This is the best sushi I’ve had visiting here in Hawaii. Sooo good! This place is definitely a must try. We got the spicy salmon roll, salmon avocado roll, and the crispy tuna rice. I really loved how the spicy salmon roll and spicy mayo actually had a good kick to it. 🍣✨

Best Ahi Tuna Poke on the island, lots of fresh tuna that melts in your mouth. Here's how you do it Michelin star good: - order the poke and ask for a side of spicy mayo - a side of freshly cut jalapenos (for an extra kick -if you like spicy) Pour the spicy mayo on top of the tuna and mix it in, then for each bite of tuna and rice add a slice of fresh jalapeno, best food I had in Maui, had it 2 times 2 days in a row!

007 Roll ($23) and Rainbow roll ($26) were excellent. Alaska roll ($28) was good. Nice to see rolls not swimming in sauces and letting the quality of the fish shine through. Pretty small restaurant for seating.

Delicious sushi and very high quality fish! Service was so nice and personable. Prices were a little high but I suppose that’s Hawai’i prices for ya. Overall, a very nice experience and I recommend giving this place a try!

This place seriously has some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. I ordered the TNA roll (a baked roll), and it was incredible—super flavorful, perfectly balanced, and topped with caviar which made it feel extra special. Even though I got takeout, the presentation was still beautiful, which says a lot about their attention to detail. The whole process was really easy. It’s a small spot, so you do have to wait outside whether you’re dining in or picking up, but they’ve set up chairs which makes it a lot more comfortable if there’s a wait. The staff was also amazing—the guy who helped me was super kind and took the time to recommend dishes, explaining which ones were more flavorful. I ended up checking Google as well before deciding, but I’m so glad I went with the TNA roll. The baked sushi here feels really unique and elevated compared to other places. Overall, such a great experience—I’d definitely come back.

Presentation and service was awesome. The fish grade was not great. Ahi tuna used for the poke roll was disappointing and price point to be disappointing was even worse. I paid over 70.00 for one sushi roll, 2 pieces of sashimi, a large hot sake, and a pint of beer.

One of the best sushi places in the island. Every time I’ve been here the food has been fantastic. The service is fast, friendly, and always helpful. Definitely a must when in Maui

Incredible sushi! The TNT roll is to die for and so fresh!! We also ordered the Alaskan Roll, Local Roll (ours featured fresh caught snapper), and a baked roll—which we learned we preferred cold sushi. Also got the hamachi carpaccio which was okay, personally didn’t enjoy the texture. Staff was friendly-can’t wait for our next visit and hope the new location opens soon!

The sushi was absolutley incredible! Our waiter was awesome as well. We ate the Miso Phat Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and our waiter takes us onto the TNT Roll and it was so worth it. If you like spicy have then add jalapeño to it. We also ordered the Baked Dynamite Roll and my mother in-law loved it. Looking forward to the new location opening up. There will be a lot more seating.
