La Poblana
About
A Slice of Puebla in South Maui
Stepping into La Poblana in the heart of Kihei feels like pulling up a chair at a family kitchen in Mexico. Far from the polished, tourist-heavy dining rooms found elsewhere on the island, this spot prioritizes authentic, soul-warming recipes over flash. The aroma of simmering chiles and fresh masa fills the air the moment you walk through the door, signaling that everything here is prepared with traditional patience.
The Flavor Profile
The kitchen shines when it comes to classic mole poblano, a complex, dark sauce that balances rich chocolate notes with the slow heat of various dried peppers. It is a labor-intensive dish that honors the restaurant's namesake region. If you prefer something lighter, the street-style tacos are the go-to, featuring tender carnitas topped with a bright, onion-cilantro relish that cuts through the richness of the pork. It is honest food that hits hard on flavor.
The Local Setting
Located conveniently for those spending the day at nearby beaches, La Poblana offers a casual, no-frills environment perfect for a post-surf lunch or a low-key dinner. The space is modest, and you might find the seating a bit close together, but that only adds to the community feel of this local staple. It is the kind of place where the kitchen staff takes pride in their heritage, serving up plates that transport you straight to the mainland. Whether you are grabbing a quick meal after exploring the Kihei coastline or looking for a reliable spot for a hearty, authentic Mexican feast, the flavors here remain consistently bold and memorable.

I highly recommend the mahi mahi taco plate. The tacos were maybe the best tacos I have had in my 41 years of life. The rice and beans were excellent and flavorful. My 8 year old asked if we could come back over and over again, we are on vacation.

Wow. Our breakfast was awesome. See the pics, those dishes were even better than they look. Huevos Rancheros over the potatoes was probably our favorite of the two dishes, but honestly the scramble was great as well. They use quality, fresh ingredients. It’s a casual spot, very Maui, service was excellent. Also has a great bar area. Coffee was also very good. Not diner-coffee at all. L Many gluten free options for anyone gluten sensitive. Our total bill was $45. We are thrilled to find this spot. We would literally re-order everything over again. We anticipate coming back a ton.

Spotted this place after a morning workout at Aloha Kihei Crossfit. Came back Tuesday night for tacos, delicious Mahi Mahi and seared Ahi tacos. Great horchata, too. Specials every night, definitely coming back. Super clean, I mean CLEAN, fun decor, clearly a family run business.
