Kinaole Grill Food Truck
About
Island Flavors Under the Kihei Sun
If you find yourself cruising through South Maui, the distinct, savory aroma of garlic shrimp wafting through the air is your cue to pull over in Kihei. Kinaole Grill isn’t trying to be a white-tablecloth establishment; it is a quintessential open-air food truck experience where the focus remains entirely on the catch of the day.
The Best Garlic Shrimp on the South Shore
The menu leans heavily into local comfort favorites. The signature garlic shrimp is the undisputed star, served with a generous heap of steamed rice and a side of crisp, refreshing mac salad. You will also find blackened ahi, seared to order, which balances a spicy crust with a melt-in-your-mouth center. The flavors here are bold, unpretentious, and capture the exact essence of casual island dining.
A Localized Dining Moment
Expect to eat your meal on a picnic table or find a nearby grassy spot to watch the palm trees sway. The atmosphere is consistently relaxed, though be prepared for a bit of a wait if you arrive during the peak lunch rush—the truck’s popularity with locals means a line is almost guaranteed. Parking in this part of Kihei can get tricky, so keep an eye out for a spot in the shared lot early on.
Whether you are a surfer looking for a post-wave refuel or a visitor wanting to skip the resort buffets for something authentic, this truck delivers a genuine taste of Hawaii. Grab a pile of napkins, find a sliver of shade, and enjoy the salt air while you dig into a hot plate of fresh, island-caught seafood.

The reviews are true- so glad I scoped out Yelp and Google review for the best spots! The wait can be a while since when we went there was only one person who was taking orders AND cooking- but the garlic shrimp with rice and salad was so delicious. No mac salad available the day we went but surprisingly the salad and dressing were so good I didn’t care. On top of that, the rice soaked in that buttery garlic caper sauce was something I will literally dream about along with those garlic shrimp. My husband enjoyed the coconut shrimp plate but said it wasn’t anything to write home about, we’ve had similar stuff in Seattle where we’re from. The garlic shrimp plate however- I definitely need another one before we go back home!!! I would also say that right now the amount of gnats and bugs outdoors due to the weather after the Kona storms has been abysmal so we tried eating on the beach but it was extremely unpleasant and just ended up eating in our car.

I got the chicken katsu plate and a couple of pieces of coconut shrimp. I was a little unsure about the salad (not exactly standard here), but everything was absolutely delicious! Definitely give this spot a try!

The coconut shrimp is maybe the best I’ve ever had! The sauce is a perfect complement with a hint of heat. Salad dressing is light and fresh. Generous portions. Between me and my wife, there were enough leftovers for one of us to have lunch the next day. Recommend.

One of the best meals I had in Maui. I wanted to go back a second time before the end of my trip. Rice was very unique and delicious. Salad and dressing were the perfect amount and tasty. Grilled fish was amazing. Everything together was PERFECTION.

Very accessible with shaved ice next door. Great vibe and owner very welcoming. Coconut shrimp very rich in flavor, very impressive on first bite. Could be better balanced as it gets a little greasy towards the end.

So good I went 3x on my trip but it wasn’t there on my last day in Kihei (Monday). I’d had it on my to-eat list and was going to order the spicy garlic shrimp until a local woman got her order saying “it’s so good I could cry!” So I had what she was having: the coconut shrimp. 5 huge shrimp fried golden brown - tasted fresh and lightly sweet. I’ve never been a coconut shrimp fan but I’m a convert. Next day tried the ahi bombs - also delicious with the wasabi sauce but the coconut shrimp is the stand out. 5 stars also for the generous salad and addictive creamy ginger dressing. I’m sad they weren’t there for my last night as I’ll be dreaming about the shrimp until my next visit.
