South Maui’s Go-To for Coastal Cantina Vibes

Perched above the bustling shores of South Kihei, Fred’s Mexican Cafe serves as a casual command post for locals and visitors alike. The open-air architecture invites the salty Pacific breeze to circulate through the dining room, often accompanied by the sound of laughter spilling out from the bar area. If you find yourself hunting for a spot to refuel after a morning of snorkeling at Kamaole Beach, this is where the transition from sandy toes to cold drinks happens seamlessly.

The Baja Influence

The menu leans heavily into California-style Mexican comfort food. Their signature fish tacos—lightly battered and finished with a zesty crema—are the primary reason people keep climbing the stairs to the second floor. Pair them with one of their oversized house margaritas, which arrive in glasses that seem to defy gravity. While the kitchen excels at heavy-hitting burritos and crisp carnitas, the real charm is the accessibility; it is the kind of place where you can wear your boardshorts and not feel out of place.

A Local Perspective

There is a specific energy here that hits its peak during sunset. Because the restaurant faces west, the light glows a brilliant orange, reflecting off the tabletops. Be aware that during the golden hour, the balcony seating fills up fast, and the noise levels can rise as the drinks flow. It’s a lively, unpretentious atmosphere that isn’t trying to be a five-star dining room, but rather a reliable spot for a messy, delicious meal. Parking in this part of Kihei can be a bit of a puzzle during peak tourist seasons, so consider walking if you are staying at one of the nearby resorts.

Food: Carnea Asada would make any Mexican shamed to serve it. They literally killed the steak and the onions/tomato side looked it was cut with a butcher knife Drinks: my margarita had a hair in it at the very middle, so I asked to remove it Service: then we had a manager coming to our table convincing us that "he can't say if the hair didn't get into it in when I was drinking it". Ambiance: we tried to attract some attention from other waiters passing by with no success - looks like the owners and the personnel does not care at all about what they're doing here

I don't get the five star reviews here as the food is mediocre at best and some of it is downright terrible. My wife's chicken enchiladas had a couple of rock hard bits of dried mystery meat (see photo). No telling how old that meat was. After we ate we exited and turned right and walked towards the back of the complex and passed by an open door where we could see the dishwashing area and part of the kitchen of Fred's. If we would have seen that nasty area first we never would have ordered food here. Take a look for yourself before ordering.

Just had dinner here and everything was excellent. Yes it was expensive, but you are in Maui, so everything is expensive. The server took our drink order and then our order for dinner. She brought the chips and salsa and actually asked if we wanted some time before putting our order in. What a nice surprise and a great idea. Food and drinks were excellent and plenty of local flare was part of the atmosphere!

Best Mexican place I've been to in a long time, one of my top 5! All the food was very delicious, chips and salsa for the table was great, drinks were huge and really good. I loved the enchiladas and my friends enjoyed their tacos. Fresh churros was the perfect ending. Service was a bit iffy but they were really busy (regardless we got all of our food and drinks) I would recommend hiring more servers! If I ever come back to Maui I'll be back for sure

Let me preface this by saying that we're from Central California, and used to a particular style of Mexican food. Because of this I'm generally wary about trying Mexican food in different locations. Stop being sad, friends was pretty good. The chips and guacamole were fantastic! And we really enjoyed the refried Pinto beans. I had the tacos. I generally like my tortillas fried but other than that they were good. I liked the rice, although it was a dryer version and less tomato than I'm used to. My friends had enchiladas. The mole, or enchilada sauce, was a little tangy and savory. Again, we are used to more tomato flavor less spice. This was a darker red, so probably a chocolate base is my guess. Finally, and this might be a bit controversial, the salsa was sweet. Now, I, personally, cannot hang with anything super spicy. I'm usually stuck dipping a tortilla chip in and shaking off any excess before I can eat it. This was very mild, so I loved it! Lol! But most people from our area would probably want to upgrade to the spicier versions. The service was quick and friendly. We stayed nearby, so I could see that it was super busy all of the time. I would definitely recommend reservations if you think you're going to pop in.

We popped in on our last day just to hang out before our flight. It happened to be Super Bowl Sunday so we got a great table outside facing the water. Our server Sage was so friendly and helpful. She let us hang out, eat and just enjoy our time looking for whales. We saw five or six different whales breach right from the patio even on a cloudy, low visibility day. They do also have a great happy hour. Highly recommend this spot for good food and a casual fun vibe.

My wife and I thought we'd give Freds in Kihei a try. Went hadn't been there in 20 years and we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is very chill and the interior is classic beach / Mexican restaurant. We started off with chips and salsa. I ordered a single shot margaritas on the rocks and to my surprise our wait person brought a double, no charge! My wife had the appetizer Taquitos and I had beef Natchos, both were excellent and large portions. If you're looking for good food, stop by Freds.

Pros: - Cool and fun setting with lots of indoor and outdoor seating (think Señor Froggs or El Squid Row vibes, but without the insanity). - The bar upstairs is big with lots of seating as well. - Breakfast was good. Our group had the Basic Breakfast and it was perfect. We also had the blueberry pancakes (they were great) and the avocado toast with a poached egg which was the best avocado toast we’ve ever had. - Lunch….phenomenal (Kalua pork is the winner). Tacos were huge and loaded with pork! The enchiladas were the same and the wet burrito was huge. All three were amazing and my favorite meal we had in Kihei! - Bonus points for some entertaining artwork in the restrooms (iykyk)! Cons: - None. The is so trivial and has nothing to do with the food, but they were out of the cool sugar skull t-shirts. Will definitely be back when we’re in Kihei again.

Great experience dining on the patio in the early afternoon mid-week. Is it spicy traditional Tex-Mex? Absolutely not! But that is not what we expected in Hawaii coming from north Texas. We opted for the pork enchiladas, pork tacos, and chicken quesadilla. All were very good. Had a side of guac which was actually a little spicy. Overall a solid meal. Had the Paloma while hubs had a beer. Very good drink. Kiddo had churros and they were very generously sized. Atmosphere on the patio is lovely. Service from Kia was great. We'll definitely return if we're on the island again.
