Izakaya Genbe
About
A Slice of Tokyo in South Maui
Step away from the sun-drenched beaches of Kihei and into the dimly lit, wood-paneled warmth of Izakaya Genbe. This neighborhood haunt captures the essence of a traditional Japanese drinking house, where the clatter of ceramic plates and the rhythmic sizzle from the open kitchen create an immediate sense of comfort. It is the kind of place where locals head for a post-shift unwind, preferring the intimacy of the bar stools to the louder, more tourist-heavy spots nearby.
Savoring the Izakaya Tradition
The menu focuses on the art of small plates meant for sharing, mirroring the authentic izakaya culture found in Japan. You will find staples like perfectly crisped takoyaki, savory chicken karaage, and delicate sashimi that highlights the fresh catch of the day. The chefs prioritize the integrity of the ingredients, letting the quality of the seafood stand out without unnecessary fuss. Whether you are craving a steaming bowl of ramen or a handful of perfectly charred yakitori skewers, the kitchen delivers consistent, soulful Japanese comfort food.
What to Expect
While the flavors transport you across the Pacific, be prepared for a cozy, tight-knit environment. Seating can feel a bit snug during the evening rush, and the atmosphere leans toward lively rather than quiet. It is an ideal spot for couples or small groups of friends who appreciate a casual, no-frills setting where the focus remains entirely on the food and drink. Keep an eye out for the daily specials written on the chalkboard; they often feature seasonal items that showcase the chef's creativity beyond the standard menu. It is an honest, straightforward addition to the Maui dining scene that favors substance over ceremony.

My last review of Izakaya Genbe was 6 years ago, and this week my wife and I were able finally return to Kihei for another excellent meal. (My review was on Yəlp back in 2020, and coincidentally ownership just responded to that review today. How timely!) WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED SINCE MY LAST VISIT: * Kiehei shopping center location near the Radio Shack * Excellent food WHAT HAS CHANGED: * Did they change locations in the shopping center or just reorganize their dining room? Either way, the seating arrangement was more comfortable. * Service was extremely friendly - fixing my only concern from 6 years ago. * Portion sizes were slightly larger than I remember. The pickled mackerel remains my absolute favorite fish dish available in Maui, and I am surprised they are not famous for it alone. I spent years dreaming of this fatty, flavorful cold fish -- and what I ate the other day exceeded my memories! New to me this time was some kind of smoked pickled daikon. Who thinks of this??? I'm in absolute awe. The next time my wife and I visit Maui, we are going to stay in Kihei so I can eat here every day. Maui is an expensive and inconvenient island vacation, but for Izakaya Genbe I will keep coming back. Thank you for another amazing, memorable meal!

We had an amazing meal at Izakaya Genbe! Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious and beautifully prepared. The 3 kinds of sashimi were incredibly fresh, the gyoza were perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the shoyu ramen had such a rich, comforting broth. The okonomiyaki was packed with flavor, and the crème brûlée was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. Everything exceeded our expectations from start to finish. Highly recommend to anyone looking for fantastic Japanese food and a great dining experience!

Ok, I was blown away by how authentic this restaurant was! Incredibly delicious Japanese food and I’ve been to Japan several times. Every dish was cooked to perfection. The stand outs were the 3 kind sashimi set, hamachi Kama, negitoro maki, and gyoza. Very reasonable pricing for the quality as well. Come during happy hour for exceptional prices for appetizers and the sashimi set!! The service and interior made me feel like I was in Japan again-I will be coming back.

I’d give this place a 3/5. The food was decent but nothing really stood out. My beef udon was a bit dry, and the chicken karaage had a powdery texture. The dessert was a definite miss, and overall, the ramen was pretty mediocre. I’d go back if it was convenient, but not necessarily for the food itself.

Small and cozy place. I ordered the ramen and was not disappointed. Great service and tasteful food. Would definitely recommend people trying it out, at least for their ramen.

Ordered sukiyaki and it was amazing..took me back to my childhood and my mom’s world class sukiyaki. Added some amazing sake and Curry Udon. Finished the dinner with 2 deserts - Mochi with Azuki beans and Matcha Cheesecake. My favorite restaurant on this amazing foodie experience. Highly recommend Izakaya Gembe. We will be back..maybe tomorrow!

After our two weeks in Japan we included a week in Maui on our way back to Toronto. While in Japan we tried various dishes and came to love Ramen. When we got to Maui we looked for Japanese restaurants and found Izakaya Genbe. We loved it right away! It reminded us in many ways of the places we dined at in Japan. The Ramen at Izakaya Genbe is very, very good. When we vacation we aim to try a different restaurant every time we dine out. This time we went to Izakaya Genba twice (our last two nights) as we wanted to have their Rame, and of course their Goyza, one more time!

Their karaage chicken is amazingly juicy one of the best I’ve had! The creamy tonkotsu is definitely my favorite; rich, flavorful, and super comforting. The black tonkotsu is okay, not my top choice but still decent. Overall, great food and a place I’d happily go back to.

Loved the visit we had here. We shared a Genbe Roll and both a Tonkatsu and Black Tonkatsu ramen with added marinated egg. SO full of delicious flavors! I only wish there was more to eat because it was that good! Also loved the small shop vibe, the friendly staff (we were laughing about shows that were playing on their TV), and the little anime touches.
