Coastal Flavors at the Edge of the Pacific

Positioned right along the sun-drenched Kihei coastline, Isana offers a masterclass in ocean-to-table dining. Stepping inside, the layout is dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows that capture the shifting blues of the South Maui horizon. The atmosphere strikes a balance between a high-energy izakaya and a laid-back island retreat, making it a go-to spot for both post-beach crowds and those looking for a refined sunset dinner.

The Art of the Roll

The menu highlights local Hawaiian fish, with the Hamachi sashimi and the signature spicy tuna rolls serving as reliable anchors for any meal. The kitchen excels at balancing traditional Japanese techniques with bold, local flavors. You will notice the rhythmic sound of chefs working the sushi bar, accompanied by the low hum of island music and the occasional chatter of diners enjoying the breeze from the lanai.

A Local Perspective

While the panoramic view is the main attraction, keep in mind that the waterfront popularity means the space can get quite lively and loud during the golden hour rush. The service is prompt and knowledgeable, often guiding newcomers toward the day’s freshest catch. It is the kind of place where you come for a quick nigiri snack and end up staying for a second round of craft cocktails as the sun dips below the Maui horizon. If you are exploring the South Kihei area and craving authentic sushi that feels deeply connected to the surrounding waters, this is a local staple that delivers on quality without feeling overly pretentious.

Lived up to its reputation for having the freshest fish in Maui! Mahi mahi was the catch of the day, and the mango cream sauce paired with it was to die for. Don't forget to order the ube creme brulee! The crab cakes and sushi were delicious too.

Everything we ate was so fresh, delicious and beautifully prepared. We sat at the sushi bar the first time and watched every roll being made. We went the next night and were seated at the bar and ordered different rolls. Both experiences were great.

Sushi and sashimi are incredibly fresh and flavorful here. Service was excellent and friendly. We asked that the meal be staggered and it was perfectly timed. The Miso Butterfish appetizer was memorable. The fresh salmon melted in our mouths. The salmon skin salad was exceptionally fresh and tasty- not at all fishy as can sometimes be in other restaurants. Sapporo available on tap. We also had the prawn noodle in garlic sauce which was delicious. I see comments about high Pricepoints for non sushi items. I agree that things like noodle dishes are a bit higher than expected. Having said that, the sushi is worth every penny. Try the red dragon role for life changing flavors. Highly recommend this restaurant for fresh fish dishes.

We visited without a reservation, on a Monday in January. So that was kind of dumb, and we had a 30 minute wait. We were seated at a perfect 2 top in the back room where they still have the fans from previous hibachi lol. Our red headed server was super sweet. The sushi station was super fast. I really loved the purple plate that the firecracker roll came on. The roll was delicious too! We got mashed potatoes bc why not? The hamachi jalapeño was perfect, the cuts seemed thicker than normal, which was nice. Overall a delightful experience and we can't wait to return. Don't miss the Ube Crema Brulee!

Fisherman owned matters! Our best meal in Maui. Crab cakes - I didn’t know they could have that much color. Fresh catch of the day had so much flavor how they prepare it. And the Komo Mai roll is the best sushi roll I’ve ever had and Huge! Icing on the cake was using my quarterly Resy perk here from AMEX.

We had a solid, middle-of-the-road experience at Isana. One big plus was the gluten-free options, including gluten-free tempura, which is hard to find and appreciated. The sliders were tasty and definitely the standout for us. That said, it felt pretty expensive, even ordering during happy hour, which made the overall value feel a bit off. Not a bad meal by any means, just didn’t quite live up to the price point for us. Worth a try if you need good gluten-free options, but expectations should be set accordingly.

Isana, the best sushi and date night combo! We came over for a quick date night. Parking is a little limited but street parking is super accessible. The hamachi carpaccio was our favorite — buttery, umami, and spicy. The nigiri platter was the perfect amount, always save the salmon for last! And our waitress Tiffany snagged us the last ube creme brûlée of the night. Mahalo Isana!

We couldn’t help but keep ordering sushi rolls. This place was a local spot and soooo good. They had to roll us out of there. We sat at the bar and got to watch the chefs work their magic. White dragon, shrimp tempura, yellowtail… so many rolls that I can’t remember them all. Really good price and good service.

We had an amazing experience at Isana! The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented — especially the sushi rolls, sashimi, and crispy fried chicken appetizer. Our waitress was wonderful and made the evening even better with her great service and warm personality. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, perfect for enjoying great seafood and sushi right in Kihei. Highly recommend this spot!

Yum! We definitely enjoyed our dinner without breaking the breaking the break as much as we could at other places and not sacrificing quality to go somewhere cheaper. Highly recommend the spicy garlic edamame, hamachi jalapeño, big eye with kizami wasabi, umi roll, crunchy tiger roll, Komi Mai roll, and if they have the special with the oysters that start with si- definitely get those. Don’t bother with the oyster shooters or handrolls because we wanted something tiny after everything else and they weren’t as impressive.
