Coconuts Fish Cafe - Kamaole
About
A Local Institution for Fresh Island Catch
Stepping into Coconuts Fish Cafe in Kihei, you are immediately greeted by the salty breeze drifting in from the nearby Kamaole beaches. This isn't your typical white-tablecloth establishment; it is a laid-back, open-air spot where the sound of clinking cutlery competes with the hum of locals planning their next surf session. The interior is refreshingly unpretentious, defined by its casual, communal seating that makes it a perfect hub for families coming straight from the sand.
The Famous Fish Taco Experience
The menu is famous for one specific, non-negotiable item: the fish tacos. Unlike the heavily battered versions found elsewhere on Maui, these feature 17 distinct ingredients hidden within the layers. Each bite offers a complex crunch—the distinct snap of fresh coleslaw, the heat of the secret sauce, and the perfectly seared, flaky mahi-mahi. It is messy, flavorful, and best enjoyed with plenty of napkins on hand.
What to Expect in South Maui
While the food is consistently top-tier, be prepared for the popularity of this South Kihei haunt. During the peak lunch rush, you might find yourself doing a quick lap of the lot to secure parking, or hovering for a moment to snag a table as diners finish their plate lunches. It is part of the charm of eating at a spot that serves authentic island flavors without the tourist-trap overhead. Whether you are craving the classic fish basket or want to try their coconut-crusted shrimp, you are getting a genuine taste of Maui dining. It is exactly the kind of place where you can wear your flip-flops and feel right at home.

Food is great. Prices are great and vibe is great l like everyone said fish tacos were good and filling but the best were coconut shrimps. If you catch the happy hour u can get the appetizer for $10. A hidden gem.

The best fish plate for a casual dine in after a morning in the waters!! The lady who took our order was awesome and suggested i just do the mango salsa and wasabi sauce on the side, with a buck extra, my meal became legendary. I will definitely visit it whenever im back in mauii, also, repeating it in our 4 day trip. Its that good! Dont miss out.

Great atmosphere and interior design elements. Friendly staff that were helpful. It is an order before you sit place, which is not my favorite way to roll. Food was excellent but less amount then I would have expected for the price.

Best food we had in Maui! We could not get enough of Coconuts Fish Café and ended up going back 3–4 times during our trip. I’m not even a big fish person, so I got the Kahlúa pork sandwich and it was absolutely to die for. So flavorful and one of the best sandwiches I’ve had. My husband got the fish tacos (their specialty) and even I tried a bite and thought they were really good. The fries were amazing too. Everything was fresh and delicious every time we went. This was easily our favorite place to eat in Maui definitely a must try!

We had awesome food here! I had the fish tacos and "made it a mountain" meaning the taco contents was served over rice. My husband got the mahi mahi. We loved our food. I had never had fish tacos and I think no other will compare! SO DELICIOUS! Price was reasonable, food was fresh, and service was friendly and helpful. You order at the counter but it still feels like a "sit down restaurant". I will return and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
