Overview & Vibe
Stepping into Yumi's Restaurant in Waimea is like taking a nostalgic journey back to authentic, small-town Kauai. Located conveniently on Kaumualii Highway, this cozy eatery serves as a beloved stop for locals and savvy travelers descending from a breathtaking morning trek at Waimea Canyon. The vibe is quintessentially local—unpretentious, welcoming, and filled with a warmth that only a family-run establishment can provide. Whether you are grabbing a seat at the famous 'Last Resort Table' or chatting with the friendly staff, you will immediately feel the genuine 'Aloha' spirit that defines the Westside dining experience.
Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes
Yumi's is a masterclass in comfort food with a local Hawaiian twist. While the menu is straightforward, the flavors are punchy and deeply satisfying:
- Loco Moco: Often cited by visitors as the best on the island, this classic features a perfectly cooked patty, savory gravy, and eggs that hit the spot after a long hike. It’s the ultimate fuel for any Kauai adventurer.
- Chicken Katsu: A golden-brown, crispy delight. The breading is light yet crunchy, encasing tender, juicy chicken that pairs perfectly with their house-made dipping sauces.
- Coconut Pie: This is non-negotiable. Famous for being served hot, this dessert features a luscious, creamy coconut filling with a toasted, flaky crust that has been drawing fans for decades. Order two—you will regret it if you don't.
Insider Dining & Tips
Because Yumi's is a casual neighborhood staple, reservations are not typically required, which makes it a fantastic walk-in destination. To avoid the lunch rush—which can get busy with local school students and canyon hikers—try to arrive before 11:30 AM or during the mid-afternoon lull. If you are traveling in a larger group, call ahead to see if the 'Last Resort Table' is available, as it offers a great vantage point to soak in the restaurant's unique charm.
Location & Parking
You can find Yumi's Restaurant at 9691 Kaumualii Hwy, Waimea. It is situated right on the main drag, making it nearly impossible to miss if you are heading toward the canyon. Parking is available directly adjacent to the building, though it can fill up during peak afternoon hours. We recommend parking carefully along the frontage area. After your meal, you are perfectly positioned to continue exploring the Waimea town historical sites or take a quick drive to the nearby salt ponds.

Met Yumi in June 1991
Went here nearly every morning in June 1991 for the delicious coconut pies. They were nice and hot — if you could beat the high school kids nearby. I think we paid less than $5 each. Even met Yumi on one of our visits.

Super Friendly Service and Delicious Food
After a beautiful trip up to Waimea Canyon we were looking for some good eats. Yumi's was right there on the main drag, but we missed it at first as the name slightly changed, or more accurately was added upon. I had the Chicken Katsu and it was so good. My friend had the Loco Moco, she had loco moco at total of 3 times during our week long trip and she said this was the best one of all. The girl at the counter, Sariah, was super sweet & friendly. I also ordered a coconut pie and it was so delicious, I wished I had ordered two! If we had been in the area again we would have eaten there twice for sure! That's Sariah for such a great experience!!
