Great food, A++ Service

Les was an absolutely amazing server. He was fun, personable, welcoming, helpful, and made us all laugh. The food was very good, the service made it an experience!

Overrated and disappointing

This was meant to be the capstone dinner for a large, extravagant family get together. We had been looking forward to this for months. It was the worst meal we had in Hawaii.<br /><br />-Service<br />Amateur at best. The waiters were pleasant and polite, but clearly inexperienced and/or new to the restaurant. We were a large party of 10, with 4 kids and had two gentleman looking after us. We ordered smoothies for the kids to keep them happy. They were brought out in large glass cocktail glasses. Two kids quickly spilled them everywhere. They were kind enough to replace them, but even after asking for plastic cups with lids (which we know they had) they brought them out in glass again. Relatively minor, but annoying. Luckily our glasses did not break, however when leaving, one of the waiters broke a wine glass while cleaning up the adjacent table. Accidents happen, but at a place like this you expect a very smooth and seamless wait staff. These guys were “fine”, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if you told me they started last week. Especially for a large party, I’d expect more. And of course, there’s a mandatory 20%? gratuity added to the bill for large parties. Great. <br /><br />-Food<br />This was probably the most disappointing aspect. Half of the table ordered the Mahi Mahi; their signature dish I was told. All of ours were wildly overcooked. Dry and rubbery. Shockingly bad, and I promise I’m not being too picky. It’s a smaller menu, as expected with fine dining, so it was even more surprising. And to boot, the piece of fish was quite small, particularly given the price point (more on that soon). None of the plates come with a side either. I also ordered the pineapple julep cocktail, and it was mediocre at best. One of the more forgettable drinks of the whole trip. All in all, massively disappointing!<br /><br />On the plus side, the Hamachi and ribs appetizers were both very tasty, if not small and overpriced. <br /><br />-Price<br />This was easily the most expensive menu we saw on the whole trip, which we anticipated going in. However, for the exorbitant prices and poor quality/quantity of food, it was also the least value for your money. $59 for a small rubbery cut of Mahi Mahi is completely outrageous. Steaks are $70, which should be a large cut of USDA prime cooked to perfection. I would always recommend AGAINST steak in Hawaii to begin with, but these cuts were probably 6 - 8 oz, which is way too small for the price point - Hawaii aside.<br /><br />-The good<br />I’m not venting or complaining here - trying to be objective and honest. There WERE nice aspects for sure. The property is beautiful, set on a massive Koi pond with thatched roofs, open windows, and elegant architecture. The grounds of the hotel are gorgeous to boot. It’s a lovely spot to eat. <br /><br />As mentioned, we had some delicious appetizers. The wine also seemed to follow the hotel pricing, which is already overpriced, but I appreciated they did not add another layer of premium for dining at the restaurant. A bottle of Frank’s Cabernet is $110, which is only double the mainland grocery store price anyway, so that was nice. It’s a great wine too!<br /><br />Our table was ready on time, orders were out correctly and in good time, and we had only pleasant interactions with staff.<br /><br />-Summary<br />For the three categories reviewed above, I have to dock a star for each. That leaves us with only 2 stars. That may seem harsh, and perhaps a restaurant with lower expectations would warrant some leeway. However Tidepools is touted as fine dining, and indeed if you ask around, many will label it as one of (if not “the”) best restaurants on the island. To that end, expectations are very high for most customers and things must be held to a higher standard. I think this is a fair assessment overall, and as such - I cannot generally recommend Tidepools given our experience. If you must go, at least try to temper your expectations and you may have a more enjoyable time.

Tidepools was terrific!

My husband and I went here for dinner on a recommendation from a friend who had previously been there a few days before. Highly recommend!. Located at the Grand Hyatt resort it - sits in a separate building with koi pond surrounding it. Very serene setting. The meal was excellent. The buns they bring out at the beginning have excellent flavor with a sea salt finish. Addicting! We shared the lobster chowder. For dinner I had the Hawaiian catch which included lobster, shrimp, and scallops. So good! My husband had the ahi fish dinner. We both had an excellent experience here and would come again.
