Thrifty Mini Mart Kekaha
About
Overview & Vibe
Tucked away in the quiet, salt-sprayed town of Kekaha, Thrifty Mini Mart Kekaha is a true local gem that defies the typical tourist-trap narrative. This is not a sprawling resort restaurant or a fancy bistro; it is a genuine, no-frills mom-and-pop store that captures the soul of Kauai’s west side. Visitors are often surprised to find a humble liquor store serving some of the island’s most authentic, mouth-watering plate lunches and fresh poke. It is a place where locals stop to grab a quick, high-quality bite before heading to Polihale State Park. Don't expect table service or white tablecloths—this is a grab-and-go destination, best enjoyed on the tailgate of your truck or at a nearby beach park under the warm Hawaiian sun.
Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes
The culinary philosophy here is simple: fresh ingredients, traditional preparation, and big portions. Here are the items that keep locals coming back:
- Pork Lau Lau: Widely considered the gold standard on the island, the pork is tender, smoky, and perfectly steamed inside taro leaves. It is the definition of comfort food.
- Spicy Ahi Poke: Fresh, locally caught tuna tossed in a balanced, piquant sauce. The heat is just enough to wake up your palate without masking the sweetness of the fish.
- Smoked Meat: A local favorite that pairs perfectly with a cold beverage, this dish offers a savory, chewy, and deeply flavorful experience that highlights Hawaii’s love for hearty snacks.
- Tripe Poke: For the adventurous eater looking for a truly authentic local delicacy, the tripe poke here receives high praise for its texture and preparation.
Insider Dining & Tips
Since Thrifty Mini Mart is a neighborhood hub rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant, there are no reservations to manage. The best time to visit is during the late morning or early afternoon when the poke selection is at its freshest and most abundant. If you are planning a trip to the Na Pali Coast or a beach day at Polihale, make this your primary pit stop for supplies. Pro tip: Since seating is non-existent, bring a beach mat or head straight to the Kekaha beach park just a few minutes down the road to enjoy your meal with an ocean view.
Location & Parking
Located at 8420 Kekaha Road, this shop sits quietly in a residential area, away from the bustling tourist corridors of Poipu or Kapaa. Street parking is available directly in front of the store. Because it is a small, high-traffic spot for the local community, be mindful of residential driveways and ensure you are parked legally. The store serves as the perfect last-stop oasis for anyone heading toward the end of the road on Kauai’s west side.

Delicious and very affordable plate lunches and poke!
This tiny liquor store/mom & pop store is a local's secret and not a tourist's store. This is not located on the main road but along a residential street. This place was just recommended by our Na Pali Coast Tour Captain when we mentioned that we wanted some Poke and the Ishihara Market was closed when we were there. They have a wide selection of Poke! They even have tripe poke! Their pork lau lau is to die for! Their poke is very affordable, delicious and super fresh! I was still eating the poke and I'm already thinking of coming back. And come back we did! One of the best poke we'd had while on the island!

Outstanding plate lunch
Probably the best plate lunch on the island! Lau lau pork is the outstanding. Also try spicy ahi poke.
