Tanaka's Shrimp

Stopped by Tanaka Kahuku Shrimp during our Oahu island road trip since it looked like a popular lunch stop. Honestly, it was a decent break from driving and the outdoor seating area was relaxing. They also had public restrooms available, which was convenient after being on the road for a while. As for the food, it was just okay in my opinion. The shrimp tasted pretty plain and didn’t really stand out compared to other shrimp spots around the island. Nothing terrible, but definitely not something I’d go out of my way for again. My party also ordered the fried pork donkatsu. The taste wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly great either. What really disappointed me was the pricing and extra charges. There was a card processing fee added without any clear signage or notice beforehand, which felt deceptive. On top of that, they seemed to nickel-and-dime customers over small things, even tiny sauce containers. It left a bad impression overall. The atmosphere was probably the best part of the experience, but if you’re doing the North Shore drive, I honestly think there are better food stops with friendlier service and more memorable food. I don’t quite understand the hype around this place. We ordered the butter garlic shrimp and tempura shrimp, and both were underwhelming - the butter garlic shrimp had almost no flavor, and the tempura shrimp was over-fried and too hard. To make matters worse, I found a small metal brush bristle in my food while eating. Definitely not an experience I’d recommend.

The environment is a real island fell. You order and pickup at their counter. Seating is covered with plenty of picnics tables available. There was a nice breeze that made the seating comfortable. The tempura shrimp was amazing. The rice and corn were ok. It is definitely a nice place to stop.
