A North Shore Legend Behind the Counter

Tucked away along the Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku Superette is far from your average convenience store. For those navigating the surf breaks of Oahu’s North Shore, this humble spot serves as a essential refueling station. While the exterior might look unassuming, the back corner houses a legendary poke counter that locals have frequented for decades.

Freshness Defined by the Pacific

The secret here is simplicity. You aren't walking into a high-end sushi bar; you are grabbing a container of incredibly fresh, cubed ahi tuna tossed in a balanced mix of sesame oil, shoyu, and a heavy hand of sweet onions. It is the kind of lunch that tastes best when eaten on the tailgate of a truck while watching the waves roll in at nearby beaches. The texture of the fish remains firm and buttery, a direct result of the high turnover from the constant stream of hungry surfers and road-trippers passing through the rural Kahuku area.

Local Flavor and Practical Notes

Beyond the poke, the shop stocks standard island snacks and drinks, making it the perfect one-stop shop before heading toward the shrimp trucks or the Banzai Pipeline. One thing to keep in mind: the parking lot is compact and can get quite busy during the midday rush, so have a little patience as you navigate the gravel lot. The hum of the industrial coolers and the rapid-fire conversations between the staff and regulars create a no-frills, authentic atmosphere that feels quintessentially Hawaiian. If you want a genuine taste of the island without the tourist markup, this is where you go.

Ask the server THREE time to confirm if it’s salmon and yet, we got Ahi poke. The portion was big but quality of the fish is meh and the sauce is not that good either. Quite salty for what it is and we threw away half the portion. Would not recommend this place for poke at all!

From my judgment this place gave themselves “the special sauce title” and promoted themselves this is where some of the best poke is. Maybe once in their early years it was considered good, but in this era I would steer really far away from this place and take yourself to Ry’s poke down the road. The amount of sodium that is used in making the poke here should’ve outright questioned. People can get sick with the high amount of sodium they use to drench their fish and then sell it to be called “flavor”. Really low quality food. This is not the place to go if you care how your food is being prepared

Looks unassuming from the outside and its right before you get to a bunch of food trucks but I'd recommend stopping here for amazing poke! The prices and protion sizes are outrageous! Will definitely be back! (Other food in photo is from da bald guy)

We have had poke all over Oahu this past week. This was okay if not a bit dry, it needed a little more shoyu or other flavor. Service was nice.

I cannot describe how much of a disservice you are doing to yourself if you pass by the superette on your trip to Oahu and don’t get yourself a bowl of poke and an ice cold beverage (get a coke or a POG Hawaiian sun can). My favorite meal in the world comes from this hole in the wall. Walk/drive to the water and eat there and it’ll hit even harder. 1000/10

Went for the poke and snacks. A little suspect of the spicy tuna because it looked like cat food. But dayum I was wrong. Best poke we have had, ever. Shoyu poke didn’t have too many onions and the tuna chunks were perfect little rubies of fresh and intense flavor. Top seaweed chips or shrimp chips with poke for the ultimate snackie.

Came here for the poke experience. I felt it was a bit dry and not as moist as it is at Foodland. They are strict about their poke servings, nothing less than 1/2 a pound. I asked for 1/2 a pound and the Auntie gave me almost a pound. It’s still an experience and a great place to check out.

I stopped buying poke here a couple years ago, because there was a hair in my poke bowl. My brother wanted to eat here earlier today, so I got a tako poke bowl thinking it must be better than it was before. When we got to our next destination and I started eating my poke bowl, I noticed there were 2 strands of hair in my poke bowl. I am definitely not eating here again. I would give no stars at all if Google gave me the option.

A friend recommended that we stop for this grocery store poke when we were in Oahu. It was right next to another stop we were making at the shrimp truck so it's easy to combine. When we were there, they only had two options. We went with the Shoyu Poke Bowl. I typically prefer my poke a little saucier, but this was pretty good. The rice was warm and perfectly sticky so no complaints there. I'd get poke here and then take it over to the shrimp truck for the perfect lunch.
