A Quiet Corner of East Maui

Perched above the crashing surf of the Hana coastline, The Restaurant at Hana Maui Resort offers an open-air dining experience that captures the raw, rugged beauty of Maui’s eastern edge. The space is defined by its high ceilings and an effortless transition from the interior dining room to a breezy lanai, where the salty mist from the Pacific is a constant companion.

Farm-to-Table Island Flavors

The culinary team leans heavily into the bounty of the Hana district, utilizing produce sourced from nearby organic farms. You will find the menu highlights local catches like opakapaka or mahi-mahi, prepared with a minimalist touch to let the freshness of the island ingredients shine. It is common to spot tropical fruit infusions in their signature cocktails, often garnished with herbs plucked from the resort's own grounds.

The Pace of Hana

This is not a spot for those in a hurry. The service moves with the unhurried rhythm of the surrounding rainforest. Because the resort is tucked away from the main hubs of the island, the atmosphere remains tranquil, perfect for travelers who have spent the day traversing the road to Hana and need a place to decompress. One thing to note is that the evening air can get quite cool and damp as the clouds descend from the mountains, so bringing a light layer is a practical local tip.

Why Dine Here?

The setting is best suited for couples seeking a quiet sunset dinner or guests of the resort looking for an upscale, yet unpretentious meal. With unobstructed views of the coastline, the sound of the wind rushing through the palms provides a natural soundtrack that far outshines any background music. Whether you are visiting for breakfast to watch the sunrise over the ocean or finishing your day with a glass of wine, the connection to the land and sea is felt in every detail.

Excellent location. Beach front with amazing views. A few other beaches are walkable from the hotel too. We enjoyed black sand beach, red sand beach, and visiting Haleakalā national park. 4/5 stars due to age of property and no AC. Room was clean and maintained, just dated. We were hoping for a sea breeze but didn’t get much from the upper building. Several fans provided which did help, but it was warm during the day and we stayed late Jan. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Laundry service available if needed but not in room. Lots of food trucks in town for food. 2 small grocery marts as well. Sunrise can been seen from balcony! Beautiful!

We picked this lovely ocean-front property for its direct beach proximity and access. Hana Kai offers a great alternative to the larger nearby resort, especially given the limited options in the area. The direct proximity to the sand is a major draw. We stepped out of our room to catch a beach sunrise in under two minutes. Also visible from our deck. We stayed in room #1. For the best direct sunrise view, I believe you would want room #3, the counterpart to our room on the opposite side. Wifi friendly, and easy after-hours check-in process. The units are large, featuring ample space, a full kitchen, a large living area, and a huge open-air balcony. This makes the property very attractive, especially for longer stays, with a very reasonable price for the added space and ocean-front location. The interior is simple, more of an Airbnb-style feel in line with what we expected in the Hana area.

We were there in early March. Unit #2 Popolana - the best view! I was worried about no AC, bugs (being so close to nature), and mosquitoes in the “jungle”. But it was so much better than I expected. You do have to keep the balcony doors open (screens open or shut) to be able to sleep with no air conditioning. Our room was incredibly clean! Yes, all the furnishings are “dated” but that didn’t matter much. We had been on the long, tense journey to get there, weaving and winding at 10mph all day! It was worth it. We found a great dinner and slept well. Being that close to the roaring waves was worth it; worth the drive, worth the dated furniture, all of it. Honestly, I didn’t want to leave. I could stand on the black rock beach watching the waves crash in forever! It is so peaceful. Again, very clean & no bugs inside! 😁 Staff were very friendly.

We rented Unit #207 from Tom and Viki directly on VRBO. They are fabulous hosts and it was a terrific unit. Everything you need to explore this side of the island and relax. The Black rock beach right outside the window is gorgeous. Remember---rent from them directly. Easy folks to deal with. Cheers

Stayed at #203 for just one night and loved the experience. Hana is a special place, and Hana Kai made everything easy for us to enjoy it. Beach recovering from the last storm, but was still a nice place to go for a stroll. Bed was comfy, …
