Thai Food By Pranee (5050 Uakea Rd)
About
A Taste of Thailand in the Heart of Hana
Finding authentic, made-to-order Southeast Asian cuisine in the remote corners of East Maui is a rare delight, and Thai Food By Pranee delivers exactly that. Located just off the main road in the sleepy, verdant town of Hana, this open-air spot feels less like a restaurant and more like a backyard garden sanctuary. The air is thick with the scent of lemongrass, galangal, and searing chili oil, mingling with the sweet, humid tropical breeze coming off the nearby coast.
The Pranee Kitchen Experience
Pranee, the namesake and culinary force behind the kitchen, crafts dishes that lean heavily into bold, balanced profiles. If you are a fan of heat, the spicy jungle curry is a staple, balancing fiery bird’s-eye chilis with the crunch of fresh, locally sourced vegetables. The pad thai is similarly distinct—avoiding the overly sweet syrup found in tourist-heavy hubs in favor of a savory, tamarind-forward depth.
The setting is casual and requires a bit of patience. You might find yourself sharing a picnic table with travelers who just finished the Road to Hana, or locals grabbing a quick, reliable lunch. Because the kitchen is compact and service is personalized, wait times can fluctuate depending on the morning rush of island explorers. It is best to arrive before the peak lunch hour to ensure you snag a plate of their signature spring rolls while they are still hot from the fryer.
Pro Tips for Your Visit
The space is essentially an outdoor patio arrangement, so it’s the perfect place to dry off if you’ve been hiking near Ohe’o Gulch. Just keep in mind that parking in this part of Hana can get tricky when the tour vans roll through, so scout your spot carefully. It is the quintessential stop for those who value authenticity over white-tablecloth pretense, offering a vibrant, peppery contrast to the typical roadside snacks found elsewhere on the island.

“The best Thai Food I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of Thai Food, but I ain’t Thai so don’t quote me on that”. - Kuya Miles @meta.max

Great Thai spot tucked away in the jungle along the Road to Hāna. It ended up being one of our favorite food stops on the drive. Everything we ate was delicious, and I appreciated that they had good vegetarian options as well. After spending hours on the road, having flavorful food in a relaxed outdoor setting surrounded by greenery was perfect. The atmosphere felt casual and authentic, and it was a nice break from typical tourist stops. We’d absolutely stop again next time we drive the Road to Hāna.

Best Thai food in the USA. Must get the crispy fish with green mango salad. Thai tea also good. We went back twice.

OMG! A local individual advised us to check out Pranee's Thai and promised us we'd for sure appreciate the quality of the food served and we couldn't have been more delighted to enjoy the Thai cuisine personally cooked up by Pranee herself! We ordered the pad thai with shrimp, the drunken noodles with fried pork belly, and panang curry with mahi mahi. Everything was delicious, fresh, bursting with unique flavor, and portion sizes were more than generous! Please go to Pranee's Thai if you're in Hana. They're located by the school underneath the massive mango tree. You can't miss it! ❤️🤩
