Tropical Flavors in a Jungle Clearing

Finding a pint of gourmet ice cream in the middle of a remote jungle road is one of the distinct pleasures of driving the Road to Hana. Coconut Glen's operates out of a colorful, whimsical stand that feels more like a rustic art project than a typical roadside vendor. You will find it tucked away near the lush rainforest canopy, where the sound of chirping tropical birds often competes with the hum of the small generator powering the freezers.

The Vegan Secret

Glen, a former fine-dining chef, pivoted to crafting coconut milk-based frozen treats that rival traditional dairy in both richness and texture. The menu stays focused on the bounty of Hawaii, featuring staples like Original Coconut, Dark Chocolate Chili, and Lilikoi. The Passion Fruit (Lilikoi) variety offers a sharp, acidic bite that cuts through the creamy sweetness of the coconut base, while the Ginger Lemongrass provides a cooling, herbaceous finish perfect for a humid Maui afternoon.

What to Expect on Your Trek

Ordering here is a low-key affair, though be prepared for a bit of a queue if you arrive at the same time as a tour van. Parking can be a tight, gravel-strewn scramble off the main highway, so keep a sharp eye out for the vibrant signage as you navigate the winding curves of East Maui. There is no air-conditioned seating here; instead, you grab your scoop—served in a coconut shell if you ask—and wander into the surrounding garden paths to enjoy your treat under the shade of massive palm fronds. It is a mandatory stop for those who value authentic, small-batch craftsmanship over mass-produced snacks while exploring the rugged beauty of the Hana coast.

Stopped at Coconut Glen’s after driving the road to Hana and it was the perfect treat to have before heading back towards Paia! The lilikoi ice cream was my favorite, but the classic coconut was also delicious! Fun atmosphere, friendly service, and some yummy ice cream! Would definitely stop here next time I’m on the road to Hana!

Omg the ice cream tastes out of the world. It truly offers world’s best ice cream. Can’t believe we were almost missing this place while our way to Hāna. I ordered ginger lemon grass and passion fruit- it was too good. I would fly all the way to Maui to just eat this ice cream again.

Coconut Glens is a great place to stop on the Highway to Hana to pick up vegan ice cream, baked goods and local drinks. The place offers about 10 flavors of ice cream and they do it well. There is usually about 5 to 10 people in line but it moves quickly. See attached video, if you order a fresh coconut the lady will step outside, cut the top off, put a straw in it and hand it to you. It doesn’t get fresher than that. The baked goods are also delicious. There is free off road parking but sometimes it is tight. But just wait a minute someone will be leaving soon. It is a stop you will not regret.

My partner excitedly asked if the person at the truck was Glenn, he paused for a moment before responding “…yeah” unenthusiastically LMAO. We still don’t know if it was actually Glenn :,(. Just thought this was too funny not to share. The guy was nice and explained some of the rotating flavours after though. We got the coconut and mango flavour. Portions were a bit small imo but it’s def worth a pit stop on the RTH drive.

The original coconut is some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had, vegan or not! Passionfruit also delicious. They also have affordable Kona coffee.

Best ice cream I've ever had in my life. Their flavors are unique and each delicious. They use real ingredients. The coffee flavored and the passion fruit ice cream was mind blowing. Plus they have a cat. I would highly recommend stopping by if you're going in that direction. Can't find ice cream like that just anywhere! *Edit: I didn't even realize this ice cream shop was vegan because my husband ordered it as I was playing with the cat. That's crazy considering how smooth and delicious the texture was, I couldn't even tell!

There was a line but it moves quickly. The parking lot is small so if other drivers make you nervous park towards the sides. I was impressed by the variety of ice creams. I was disappointed by the portion received for the price. I really wish I had taken a picture of the ice cream itself but our 3 flavor bowl was a good standard ice cream scoop worth. The ice cream is WONDERFUL! My favorite was the Original or Pineapple Banana. PLUS - they are in the middle of no where so it was a good place to stop and stretch. I suggest it as a one time experience.... just wouldn't do it every time we travel that way.

Stopped by for some morning ice cream and banana bread on the road to Hana. All the ice cream is vegan, made from coconut. The flavors and texture were amazing! I’m not a fan of vegan ice cream, but the texture felt like real ice cream (rich and creamy). Flavors were rich and vibrant as well. Recommend the coconut and mango. Entire experience was good. Got to witness staff chopping open fresh coconuts for other customers. The entire place is unique and captures a fun vibe.
