I Lava Tacos
About
A Taste of Hana on the Road to Recovery
Finding a satisfying meal while navigating the winding turns of the Hana Highway is an art form, and I Lava Tacos has mastered the craft. This roadside gem serves as a vibrant pit stop for travelers seeking more than just standard tourist fare. The scent of cilantro, lime, and searing carne asada greets you long before you reach the service window, cutting through the humid, tropical air of East Maui.
The Menu: Fresh, Bold, and Local
The culinary approach here focuses on simplicity and sourcing. You’ll find house-made salsas that provide a sharp, acidic punch to pair with their signature fish tacos, featuring the catch of the day sourced from local waters. The tortillas are consistently warm and pliable, providing a grounded base for their generous portions of marinated proteins and shredded cabbage slaw. It is the kind of food that demands you eat it immediately, standing on the grass while the wind picks up from the nearby coastline.
What to Expect at This Maui Pit Stop
The setup is authentically casual. Seating is sparse and open-air, meaning you are sharing your lunch with the occasional free-roaming chicken and the sounds of the lush rainforest canopy. It is an unpretentious environment designed for surfers, hikers, and road-trippers who value flavor over white-tablecloth ceremony. Keep in mind that the rugged terrain of the island means credit card signals can occasionally be temperamental, so carrying a bit of extra cash is a smart move before you venture deep into the Hana district. Whether you are craving a mid-journey snack or a full post-adventure meal, these tacos offer a genuine slice of Maui living that feels far removed from the polished resort scene.

We were super hungry and found this cool little taco truck in Hana. Tacos were good and the truck was neat.

Delicious food. Generous portions. One burrito feeds two adults as long as you get a side dish also. I recommend getting your food to-go though. The flies can be bothersome. Just the nature of outdoor eating. My only complaint about the food is that the guacamole was only mashed avocado. No onion, tomato, cilantro, lime, etc. Not really a proper guacamole. Still, I'm really happy I ate here.

After a long day on the road to Hana we were starving. This food truck was super amazing! It’s in a spot with a bunch of other options too. We all got the fish taco plates because everything else had sold out and we were not disappointed! Seriously amazing food and there was a lot of it. The place closes when they run out though so plan accordingly. They also aren’t cheap but that is most food on the road to Hana.

Delicious food! We got a pork burrito, steak and chicken tacos, and a chicken quesodilla. Everything was outstanding. Solid size burrito, too (Mexican coke for scale)

This place is incredible! One of the biggest and best burritos I’ve ever had! Whenever I have carnitas, I usually find that it is okay at best, but this was cooked to perfection. The chips were homemade and amazing, and the guacamole was fire. They were out of steak and chicken by about 6:30 when my wife and I came here, so be ready with a backup plan for your order. Do not miss this! **********UPDATE*********** Okay, I came back today for lunch. More stupidness. Had the carne asada and chicken tacos. Un. Be. Lievable. Best ever. Seriously. 100% authentic, and taken to a whole other level. And they had a smoked marlin dip that was amazing. It doesn’t even matter what you order here — you can’t go wrong!

I think there very possibly the best street tacos I’ve had to date! The steak was very good but the pork was the elixir of life! Had crispness to the meat and also the shells! So tender and juicy! I would highly recommend. The wife would agree and also got the chicken which was very good!

Cute taco truck in Hāna open to ~ 6pm, give or take a bit. The a la carte tacos were small but packed with flavor and very enjoyable. Chips were a bit over fried but still good with the guac. Hours open may not match what is shown on google maps.

Coming from a Hispanic background I tend to try a carne asada taco which is the test for a taco spot - if one can create a genuine tasty carne asada taco the rest will follow. I cannot say enough about the taste and traditional quality. This place is legit hands down!!!! It was by far amazing. I appreciate the time I Lava Tacos took to create a genuine quality tasty experience! Perfection!

Fantastic burrito and quesadilla. The dude running it was super friendly and we laughed with him quite a bit while waiting for our food. We got lucky because we arrived outside of his normal business hours, but he was still serving. Really cool food truck, really cool dude.
