Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack
About
A Taste of Waimanalo Authenticity
When you pull off Kalanianaʻole Highway into the gravel lot of this humble, open-air spot in Waimanalo, you immediately smell the scent of garlic butter hitting a hot flat-top grill. Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack doesn't rely on bells and whistles; the draw here is the no-nonsense approach to island comfort food. The corrugated metal roof and picnic tables set the stage for a casual, wind-swept lunch that feels exactly like a Hawaiian beach day should.
The Grill-Master’s Secret
The kitchen is best known for its surf and turf combinations. The steak is typically served as a tender, well-seasoned ribeye, while the shrimp are famously doused in a generous, house-made garlic butter sauce that you will inevitably want to soak up with the accompanying scoop of white rice. It is the kind of food that demands a roll of paper towels rather than a cloth napkin.
What to Expect
This is a destination for locals and travelers looking for a break from the resort crowds of Honolulu. Service is efficient, though keep in mind that this is a popular stop for weekend beach-goers, so be prepared for a bit of a wait during the peak lunch rush. Parking can get tight as the afternoon traffic picks up, so plan accordingly. If you value a laid-back atmosphere where the soundtrack is the breeze moving through the trees rather than background music, this corner of the Windward Coast is your best bet for a satisfying, hearty meal.

One of my favorite spots on the island!! Really hoping they didn’t close down for good 😭 the food here is delicious and it’s right by the beach, so you can grab it to go and eat on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. My only complaint is the service is not the greatest here, they’re a bit rude. But the food is so good and affordable, I don’t even care lol

We ordered our lunch to go. The food was delicious and the prices are very competitive! We ordered fish and steak and both were awesome! They handled food allergies great!

Delicious! They have a variety of daily specials. We ordered the short ribs (Kalbi), garlic shrimp combo with mac salad and the fried chicken, garlic shrimp and tossed salad combo. Both were flavourful and very fresh. Don’t let the exterior fool you…well worth a visit.

Good Value, flavor, and portion size. Nothing too glamorous, but quality Hawaiian staples. Beach like a local and enjoy some garlic fries a few steps from Waimanalo Beach. Credit card only here no cash.

Was just passing by the area and stumbled upon Ono’s, so glad I did! I had the furikake ahi tuna and it was sooo good! Super fresh and flavorful. There’s seating both inside and outside, and the staff were really friendly. Definitely worth a visit!

We were following an audio guided tour when we came across this place. I am so glad we did. The food was scrumptious. Everyone really enjoyed what they got. The staff was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. I highly suggest you stop by and taste the items on their menu. You will not be disappointed. The garlic fires and fish tacos were my favorite!

I’ve been coming to this place for the past 4 years, and it makes me genuinely happy to see how much they’ve grown. They’ve never let me down when it comes to flavor, at least not with the dishes I always order! They’re located right next to my favorite beach in Oahu, Waimanalo, and offer incredible Hawaiian and local-style cooking. I highly recommend anything with fish, the portions are filling, the taste is amazing, and it’s always fresh. The Ono with mango sauce, garlic ahi, and coconut shrimp are an absolute must try no doubt about it. The staff is super friendly and the setup has a really cozy, welcoming feel. A true gem on the island!
