A Taste of Old Hawaii in Waimanalo
If you find yourself cruising down Kalanianaʻole Highway toward the windward side of Oahu, the savory aroma of slow-roasted pork is likely drifting from Keneke's. This roadside institution captures the essence of a traditional Hawaiian plate lunch, serving up hearty portions that define local comfort food. The setting is refreshingly simple, featuring open-air picnic tables where the salty breeze from the nearby coast keeps things cool while you wait for your order.
Signature Island Flavors
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Kalua pork, smoked until it falls apart at the touch of a fork. It’s smoky, tender, and pairs perfectly with a scoop of creamy macaroni salad and two mounds of sticky white rice. For those who can't decide, the combo plates offer a generous mix of their staple meats, including tender beef stew and crispy fried chicken. The portions are massive, making it an ideal refueling stop for surfers and beachgoers heading to the pristine sands of Waimanalo Beach just a few minutes away.
The Local Rhythm
Keneke’s operates on island time. While the service is efficient, don't be surprised if there is a short line during the lunch rush as locals and tourists alike wait for their freshly packed styrofoam containers. Parking can be a bit tight when the shop is busy, so keep an eye out as you pull off the main road. It is a no-frills, loud-and-proud establishment that values substance over style, providing an authentic dining experience that feels like a backyard luau without the fuss. It is the perfect spot for anyone looking to ditch the tourist traps and eat like a true local on their way to the windward coast.

After spending the morning at Kaiona Beach Park with my cat, Laki, we stopped by Keneke’s for lunch and had such a wonderful experience. The outdoor seating area felt very pet-friendly, and everyone was incredibly warm and welcoming 🐾 I ordered the Coconut Shrimp lunch special, and it was honestly some of the best coconut shrimp I’ve had on Oʻahu. The shrimp were incredibly crispy, packed with real coconut flavor, and clearly made fresh to order. It took a little longer to prepare, but it was absolutely worth the wait. The lunch special came with rice, macaroni salad, and a drink for only $13.60, which feels almost unbelievable compared to Waikiki prices these days. The portions were huge!! I ended up taking leftovers home and still had food left in my fridge later that day. The cashier was especially friendly and welcoming. You can tell this is a place loved by locals, but it also feels comfortable and inviting for first-time visitors. When we arrived, we were lucky and there was no line. By the time we finished ordering, a crowd had formed behind us, which says a lot about how popular this place is. If you’re visiting around lunchtime, be prepared for a wait, but the food is definitely worth it 🥰😸 We’ll absolutely be back. Mahalo! 🌺 📍 IG / YT : @oahutabbycats

They’re here at Ko’olau distillery tonight and we are BLOWN AWAY by their burger and pastrami fries! 100% recommend! The prices are great for the quality of the food. Wish I would’ve taken a pic but we ate it too fast haha

Me and my friend got a deal which was 10$ for two Teriyaki Burgers and a large drink. The taste of the burgers was very good and a good size too, which made it a great value deal. The lady who took our order was also very nice. Also great views from the outdoor seating!

Worst service ever....I ordered 3 choice mix plate and it says on the end that it's 6 fantail deep fried shrimp and I ordered one choice laulau and two choice shrimp and they give me only four pieces of shrimp.... they need to explain on there menu that they only going give you four cuz what if I ordered just one choice shrimp what am I going get just 2 pieces of shrimp and I paid almost $20 for my plate.... theremenuneed to be explained or at least tell the people what you getting cuz that's robbery when your menu say it you stick to your menu... that's false advertisement.... don't go there you don't know what else they not giving you in your plate that your supposed to get and paid for.....

We ordered teriyaki burger and garlic fries. You really can't beat the price and the view. The burger was good but nothing out of ordinary. The first few bites of garlic fries was unreal, super delicious. But the more we ate the greasier it got. We do recommend but we waited about 30mins for the food FYI.

Stopped here for a quick bite in Waimanalo. We ordered the Pork Adobo, Deluxe Cheeseburger, and fries, and everything was good overall. It was honestly pretty affordable compared to the usual city prices. The fries, however, didn’t seem to have any salt or seasoning, so they tasted a bit bland. The wait time was a bit long, but they do have a nice seating area with beautiful mountain views, which made the visit more enjoyable :)

Keneke’s was a good stop for a casual meal. I forgot to take pictures of the food, but everything we ordered was tasty and the portions were really generous. It’s a nice spot with a great view of the mountains, and the prices felt very reasonable. The only downside was that it took forever to get our food, so don’t come if you’re in a rush. Overall, still a solid local place and I’d try it again.

Delicious! We loved the food so much we came twice during our stay on the island. The people working in the back were very friendly and generous. The food was delicious, best loco moco I’ve had and the triple bbq plate was so good.
