Historical Maalaea General Store & Restaurant
About
A Taste of Old Maui Harbor
Perched overlooking the serene waters of Maalaea Harbor, the Historical Maalaea General Store & Restaurant serves as a bridge between the island’s maritime past and its present-day culinary scene. Long before the modern tourist hubs took hold, this site acted as a vital pitstop for locals. Today, it retains that unpretentious, open-air charm that defines Wailuku’s coastal dining culture.
The Harbor-Side Experience
The air here carries a faint, briny tang from the Pacific, punctuated by the occasional scent of sizzling garlic and fresh catch emanating from the kitchen. It is the kind of place where the floorboards might creak a little under your feet and the ceiling fans spin with a rhythmic, hypnotic hum. The crowd is a mix of boat captains prepping for sunset sails and families looking for an authentic, no-frills breakfast or lunch before heading out to the Maui Ocean Center nearby.
Menu Highlights and Local Nuance
The menu leans heavily into island comfort food, with their signature Kalua pork and eggs drawing consistent praise for its smoky, tender profile. If you happen to visit during the winter months, keep an eye on the horizon; the restaurant’s vantage point makes it a premier, if slightly noisy, spot for spotting humpback whales breaching in the bay. Be prepared for a challenge if you are arriving during the busy midday rush—parking in the lot can get tight as tour groups arrive—but the unobstructed view of the West Maui Mountains is well worth the squeeze. It is an ideal stop for those who value historical character over polished, high-gloss dining rooms.

Had to buy breakfast on the fly since we were getting on an early morning snorkeling trip. Ordered ahead on the phone and picked up my food within minutes which was great. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Cool little spot while in the area. Unfortunately the steak burritos were honestly the greasiest thing we've had. Wouldn't come back for the food but the staff was great. Paid 57$ for 2 burritos and 2 coffees crazy expensive for mediocre food.

Got anxiety while boarding a snorkeling expedition and literally yeeted myself off the boat last minute - my friends stayed on, so I had a couple hours to kill! Popped in here to look around - and was surprised with a fully vegan menu board 🥹. Usually places so close to the water are all fish etc and don’t have any vegan options. What an absolutely lovely surprise. On their website the vegan options are clearly labeled but all mixed in with regular menu - inside, it’s on a completely separate board. My husband and I got veggie dogs and shared a beer. Outside seating on a covered patio, no inside seating. Right across from the marina. This place rocks - thanks so much for the vegan menu it means a lot to us vegans out here!! And by the way I added your listing to HappyCow - usually takes a couple weeks for spots to be listed but you guys definitely deserve a spot on there. What an incredibly unpretentious, hidden gem.

We went on an early morning whale watching tour (March 2026) and we were all ready to eat afterwards; we decided to take a simple stroll down to the General Store near the harbor. To our surprise, there were plenty of dining options available to us, both breakfast and lunch, suitable for our picky eaters, a toddler, and those of us with a sweet tooth. We decided to sit outside and enjoy the view and the breeze. The safe was extremely attentive with refills and collecting completed dishes and trash. We absolutely recommend this little gem to anyone in the area.. especially if you're in the area for a tour and need a bite to eat.

Had the KALUA PORK TACOS House-made kalua pork in soft flour tortillas on a bed of shredded lettuce topped with cilantro crema sauce. Pork was dry out and small portions. $50 for two orders of Pork Tacos and two sodas.

I was here years ago when they still sold their heavenly mushroom burger... ATMOSPHERE: It's still the original building though I have never been in before today. Open-air with no a/c. There are seats & tables and counter seating on the spacious and covered front entry lanai with views of the harbor, main drive and coast guard building. There is a small enclosed room off to the side with more tables and chairs if you want more of an indoor effect, still open-air and with a tiny window. There is a tiny seating area inside by the front bay window that can seat 3 at best. They're still mainly a general store, so you can grab things like beer, liquor, wine, groceries, canned goods, OTC meds, etc. The takeout counter was the main purpose of my visit. They offer a pretty extensive coffee menu, also breakfast items, fresh ahi pokē, lunch sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, quesadillas, burgers and tacos. FOOD: Mushroom Burger Wow. THE BEST mushroom burger I've eaten so far, but unfortunately no longer sold. The burger was thick, hot, very tasty and juicy and had that hard to find broiled flavor. It's topped with Swiss, tomatoes, lettuce, red onions, lots of sliced pickles and mushrooms. I loved the bun! It was hinged on one side which helped the burger stay in perfect shape while eating it. Fries are optional shoestring and were delicious and full of flavor. SERVICE: Everyone was friendly. You order your food at the counter and pay at the main register. OVERALL: The word of mouth and reviews are all true! I can't wait to try their other selections.

What a gem! The pancakes here should be world famous, so this is my attempt at beginning that path to stardom. Found this place online, it wasn't a chain and they had breakfast was our only search criteria. Then they brought the pancakes out and they are HUGE! Couples can easily share them, but won't want to, they're very tasty as well. Our server was wonderful, offering us extra syrup and utensils for our to-go box. Great find!

Stopped in for breakfast before our Trilogy tour – very low key diner with delicious food. I finally broke down and something with Spam in it ( , it was really tasty. Good coffee and friendly service. If the retail part of the store happens to be closed, they’ll gladly open it for you. Great spot to grab a bite if you’re traveling between Kihei and Lahaina.

A lovely and welcoming store that accommodates one of the best if not the best breakfast restaurant on the island. We enjoyed a wonderful everthing bagel breakfast with fresh coffee. We didn't try any lunch options as we were on our way to the airport. They offer vegan options too. We sat inside but there is outdoor seating on the covered patio available too. Nice harbor view is an add-on.
