A for Local Island Comfort

Tucked away in the heart of Wailuku, Asian Mart & Fast Food serves as a functional bridge between a well-stocked pantry and a bustling lunch counter. This isn't your typical sit-down destination; it’s a place for those who know that the best meals on Maui often come in a to-go container. The air inside carries the distinct, savory scent of shoyu, ginger, and frying garlic, signaling exactly what the kitchen is working on before you even hit the counter.

The Wailuku Lunch Rush

For office workers and locals traversing Central Maui, this spot offers a reliable menu of plate lunches that prioritize substance over pretense. You will find staples like savory pork dishes, crisp stir-fried vegetables, and portions that are meant to keep you fueled through a long afternoon. The kitchen focuses on recipes that lean into traditional home-style cooking rather than flashy plating.

Practical Details for Your Visit

Since this is a high-traffic area in Wailuku, keep in mind that parking can be a bit of a shuffle during the peak 12:00 PM rush. The space is modest and utilitarian, designed for quick exchanges rather than long, lingering conversations. It is perfect if you are hunting for specific Asian groceries or if you simply need a hot, consistent meal without the fuss of reservations or waitstaff. Whether you are grabbing a quick box to take to a nearby park or stocking up on ingredients for your own kitchen, it provides an authentic look at the daily food culture of the island.

A good friend pointed these guys out to me as she recently tried them. ATMOSPHERE: Located in the former Minit Stop on Lower Main Street, the exterior has not been updated at all so it's rather dilapidated-looking. The only change inside is the addition of a hot foods counter. The old beverage refrigerators are still there and house convenience store-like selections with the dry goods shelves boasting mostly Filipino and a mix of Asian goods, snacks, foods, spices and ingredients. A tiny selection of fresh produce is also available. The hot foods line is immediately to the right as your enter. Parking is plentiful. MENU: Ala carte or combo plates of Filipino fare, traditional local plate lunches, tako and ahi poke, bubble tea and Filipino desserts. FOOD: 2 Choice Meal - $11.99 I chose pancit, pork & peas and pig's feet soup. The pancit was 90% bihon and 10% egg noodles, a plus in my book. It was lightly seasoned and stir fried with pork, carrots and onions. I added in some shoyu for some kick. The pork and peas had great flavor - heavy on the tomato and pimentos though the pork pieces were pretty fatty. I love peas and will always welcome an overload but that wasn't the case here. There were also cold spots in my scoop, meaning the selection was probably refrigerated leftovers heated up again. No can! I was wanting to try their chicken adobo but it wasn't available so I settled for their pig's feet soup. My favorite pig's feet soup is the Okinawan version. I didn't know what to expect with the Filipino version, but it was pretty vinegary. Good but not my favorite use of ingredient in a soup. In addition to the huge cuts of pig's feet, the soup also contained onions and cabbage. Portion size was average. SERVICE: I called before coming in to make sure they were serving lunch. The lady who answered the phone didn't sound happy so I had my guard up going in, LOL. Happy to report that I was immediately greeted and assisted in a friendly manner. Credit cards are accepted and no tip is required. OVERALL: I'm always down for more food options but the cuisine and offerings here can be had at numerous other establishments around town that do it better.

I recently visited a Filipino grocery store and was pleasantly surprised by the great selection of ready-to-eat authentic Filipino food that was available at very affordable prices. The store also offered a variety of other snack and grocery items, which made it a one-stop shop for all my needs. The ready-to-eat food was particularly convenient, as it allowed me to enjoy authentic Filipino flavors without having to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I was very impressed with the quality and variety of the food, and I will definitely be returning to this store in the future. If you're a fan of Filipino cuisine and looking for an affordable, convenient way to enjoy it, I highly recommend this grocery store.
