Chicken In A Barrel BBQ Wahiawa
About
Island-Style Smoking in Central Oahu
Located in the heart of Wahiawa, this roadside staple brings a distinct wood-fired approach to Central Oahu’s dining scene. The kitchen centers around custom-made steel barrels, where chicken is slow-cooked over kiawe wood. This process infuses the meat with a profound, earthy smokiness that you can catch on the breeze before you even step through the door.
The Kiawe-Smoked Experience
Expect a menu that prioritizes simplicity and patience. The signature sampler is the move here, featuring portions of their tender smoked chicken, savory ribs, and house-made chili. The chicken skin achieves that elusive balance of crispy edges and juicy meat, while the house-made BBQ sauce provides a tangy, sweet counterpoint to the deep, charred notes of the kiawe smoke.
Local Flavor and Practical Notes
The atmosphere is strictly laid-back and casual, ideal for a quick lunch on the way up to the North Shore or a low-key dinner after exploring the nearby botanical gardens. You will notice a constant hum of activity, as locals filter in for takeout boxes filled with hot, smoked proteins. Keep in mind that the parking lot can be a tight squeeze during the mid-day rush, so tuck your vehicle in carefully. It is the kind of place where paper plates and plastic forks are the standard, focusing entirely on the quality of the barbecue rather than the presentation. Whether you are a resident or just passing through the center of the island, the intense aroma of the pits is a clear sign that you have found one of the most reliable smoked meat spots in Wahiawa.

Damn good ribs, mac salad, and sweet cornbread. Everything was made to perfection, the BBQ sauce was smokey, sweet, and a little heat - perfect. Chill spot for some excellent food.

We ate here last night, and unfortunately, it was a really bad experience. The chicken was undercooked—I almost threw up after the first bite. To make things worse, the prices were ridiculously high for the quality of food we got. Even the sweet potatoes were overcooked. Honestly, it’s just not worth it. I would highly recommend Zippy’s instead. Much better food and overall value. Really disappointed with this place. :( P.S I decided to to takeout the chicken and cooked it again to my home

I had high expectations coming here because of people’s recommendations and the high rating. To sum everything up in one word, DRY. This place is pretty expensive, a rack of ribs is $50! The place could be cleaner. It’s not an actual restaurant. You order and then go eat at a table and throw everything away yourself, more like fast food. I would compare this to El Pollo Loco. The person at the register was in a mood on top of everything. The one thing that I did like was their corn bread, French fries and sweet potato fries. Atmosphere made up for it or it would be two stars. Some lady was sing in the small stage they had. She wasn’t great, but it was good enough.
