Insider Dining & Tips
Securing a table at Alan Wong’s is currently one of the most sought-after experiences on Oahu. Because of its limited capacity and high demand following its reopening, reservations are essential. We recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance via the hotel’s official dining portal. If you find yourself without a reservation, inquiring at the host stand early in the afternoon for potential cancellations is your best strategy. Aim for a sunset reservation to take full advantage of the stunning coastal views as the sky shifts from gold to twilight.
Location & Parking
Alan Wong’s is situated at 5000 Kahala Ave, nestled inside The Kahala Hotel & Resort. For convenience, the hotel offers professional valet service, which is the most seamless way to access the property. If you choose to explore the area, the restaurant is a short drive from the bustling heart of Waikiki but feels worlds away, offering a tranquil escape along the shore. We recommend arriving twenty minutes early to enjoy a pre-dinner stroll along the beach path adjacent to the resort.

Perfect. That’s it. Perfect.
When you walk in, you notice an elegant restaurant. There are windows running the entire length looking south over the pounding surf. The decor is elegant without pretense.

Our server was attentive and never annoying. We leisurely dined.

The slaw salad with tuna in a soy sauce was exceptional and the serving large enough to split. We both had a kampachi dish, each served a different way. A symphony of flavors!

Since we do not eat meat, my wife asked to substitute the shrimp pork hash, and the chef eagerly obliged. They prepared a shrimp mousse and served it in an edible squash blossom. Delightful, my wife tells me. The portions are large. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert.

Alan Wong‘s is an island treasure and we could not recommend it more highly.

Outstanding: With Chef Wong in the Kitchen Reviewing Each Plate
We had a wonderful birthday celebration last night at the restaurant. Absolutely terrific dinner and a beautiful setting.

Chef Wong is in the kitchen reviewing each plate that comes out. Very impressive and appreciated.

We had the crabcake as a first course. Perfect consistency in an interesting sauce.

My wife had the ginger crusted onaga which she remembered from the King Street and canoe house locations. It exceeded her expectations.

I had the ahi. Again, outstanding with an unusual sauce. Great dish.

I highly recommend this restaurant and I’m very pleased that Chef Wong reopened after a seven year closure. Getting a reservation is a challenge, but worth the effort.

Kahala Sunday Brunch has been downsized
We went for the famous Sunday Brunch buffet at Kahala Resort. This used to be held by Hoku, but in April ‘26 Alan Wong took over. We were told it was essentially the same. Uh, not exactly …

We saw the previous buffet on Youtube. Generous slices of Prime Rib and Suckling pig. Large, succulent lobster tails. All kinds of sushi and sashimi. Sign us up!

The restaurant view is gorgeous. The staff are friendly and accommodating. And maybe they’re starting to work out the kinks, or have a new staff, or a very tightfisted manager. But I would say this buffet is about 65-70% as good as what I saw previously.

What their staff referred to as prime rib was a rib eye steak, with three paper thin slices carefully prepared for you. The suckling pig was again, available only in small portions (bone and gristle included). The crabs legs were the smallest and thinnest legs I have ever seen, like miniatures. Limited sushi selection and not presented well. Lobster tails were cut in half and looked like the smallest lobsters I have seen. Each piece of lobster was maybe the size of a medium prawn, at best.

No real fruit available (yes some pineapple and strawberries at the chocolate fountain, but no real fruit or fruit salad. Dessert options limited. Yes the little kids liked the chocolate fountain and I had some bread pudding, but again, quite limited.

With a cost of almost $300 for two people, two soft drinks (kind of petty charging for every drink, no mimosas or anything like that, just free tap water). $115/person is just not worth it. The people were very nice, but I ate very little and left disappointed. Just not worth it to me.
