The Green Light Was the Bar Stool
If Friday night in Waikiki had a living room, it would probably be The Gatsby.

I walked in around 9:30 p.m. and headed straight for the main bar. The place struck the perfect balance between upscale lounge and neighborhood hangout—beautiful space, talented local musicians, a stylish crowd, and music that actually lets you hear the person sitting next to you. Imagine that.

I ordered a lychee martini, which was excellent... although my credit card thought it was merely good. The cocktails aren't cheap, but honestly, that's part of Waikiki.

Not long after I sat down, a handsome younger guy claimed the stool beside me. We started talking about surfing, workouts, and island life. He was a personal trainer, and I'm into CrossFit, so before long we were debating mobility drills and recovery like we'd known each other for years.

Some conversations just have a way of making you forget to look at your phone. This was one of them.

Eventually he asked me to dance, and saying yes turned out to be the easiest decision I made all night.

He definitely had better rhythm than I did. I'm spectacularly uncoordinated, but he somehow made me forget that. The dance floor was packed, the band was fantastic, and somewhere along the way I stopped checking the time.

Apparently The Gatsby serves more than great cocktails.

I'll spare TripAdvisor the rest of the details, but let's just say Waikiki delivered a Friday night I'll be smiling about for a long time.

If you're looking for a place where people actually meet instead of just scrolling, grab a seat at the main bar, order a cocktail, smile at someone who smiles back, and let the evening write the rest of the story.

Five stars for the live music, the atmosphere, and the reminder that sometimes all it takes is an empty bar stool to change the course of an evening.
