Sunsets and Sautéed Island Fish

Perched directly above the famous sands of Waikiki Beach, Hula Grill offers an open-air dining experience that captures the essence of a classic Hawaii beach house. The sound of waves crashing against the seawall provides a constant, rhythmic backdrop, while the salty breeze keeps the atmosphere relaxed even when the room fills with hungry visitors. You are here for the view, but you stay for the local ingredients.

A Taste of the Pacific

Chef-driven plates focus on the bounty of the islands. The signature Firecracker Mahi Mahi is a staple for a reason, featuring a chili garlic glaze that cuts through the richness of the fish. If you prefer something lighter, the menu prioritizes locally sourced produce, resulting in salads and appetizers that feel garden-fresh rather than transported. Don't leave without trying a slice of their famous Hula Pie, a towering heap of macadamia nut ice cream and fudge that is large enough to necessitate a shared spoon.

The Rhythm of the Shore

The space leans into a casual, plantation-era aesthetic with warm wood finishes and breezy ceiling fans. It is the kind of place where your sandals fit in just as well as dressier resort wear. Because the venue is situated on the second level of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, the elevation offers a vantage point that is slightly removed from the dense foot traffic of Kalakaua Avenue. Be prepared for a bit of a buzz; during the evening, the live music can get quite spirited, turning the dining room into an energetic hub. It is the perfect spot for travelers who want a front-row seat to the Honolulu sunset without the pretense of formal high-end dining.

We started with the calamari appetizer, which was absolutely outstanding, the best calamari I have had in a long time. It was perfectly crispy, flavorful, and delicious. Unfortunately, my entrée was a completely different experience. I ordered the grilled chicken, and it was very disappointing (2/5). It lacked flavor and was not enjoyable. Service was also confusing. When I asked for a to-go box, the waiter took my entrée plate away and then returned with a box for the leftover bread instead of my chicken. By the time the misunderstanding was corrected, my entrée had already been taken from the table. While the calamari was exceptional, the disappointing entrée and service issues made for a frustrating dining experience.

This restaurant was good just took a little while for the food to come out. The atmosphere was a little stuffy this is a reservation restaurant for sure if you don’t they can sit you at the bar which the menu is different. Customer service is a five. They’re extremely friendly and willing to help when they found out it was my birthday. They gave me a huge slice of cake. Staff made us feel very welcome. and this is an upstairs restaurant with a gorgeous view of the ocean so scenery wise this is great.

We stopped by Hula Grill Waikiki during breakfast hours and had a great experience overall. Walked in without much of a wait, which was a nice surprise given how busy Waikiki can get. For our meal, we ordered the loco moco, a coffee, and some fresh papaya. Everything arrived quickly, which we really appreciated since we were pretty hungry. The loco moco was hearty and satisfying, the coffee hit the spot, and the papaya tasted fresh and refreshing—perfect for a morning in Hawaii. The service was efficient, and the relaxed island atmosphere made it easy to enjoy the meal without feeling rushed. Overall, a solid breakfast choice in Waikiki that I’d happily return to.

We really had the best time here! We had walked up and down the street past the location many times and Gigi, the host, always looked so happy and approachable so we stopped to talk to her and she was so engaging and lovely. We were tired as we had just arrived and were checking out the area and she was really welcoming. Hula Grill is above Dukes and is a fabulous overlook of Waikīkī Beach with a more chilled atmosphere than Dukes. We dined twice for dinner. The drinks and food were both excellent and perfectly timed, our waitresses were both fun and engaging. The salads were fresh, the ribs were just so delicious and crispy we got them both times, with mash instead of rice per our waitress’ recommendation, and boy was she right. We tried the pie too which was huge! Overall a wonderful experience watching the sun go down over Waikīkī beach.!!

This is our fifth time to Waikiki and have never eaten at Hula’s. This will change going forward. We had a phenomenal dinner and our server Sterling made it even better. Thank you Sterling for suggesting dinner options and making our experience so great! I can’t remember the bartenders name but he also had great suggestions before dinner. We thought the food was on point, great flair and cooked to perfection. We loved the ambiance and sitting outside with the sun setting. Again, we thought our meal was fabulous!! Everyone working there was a pleasure to deal with. We will definitely be back in the future.

Hula Grill exceeded every expectation. The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Every dish tasted thoughtful and well-balanced. The cocktails were just as impressive: refreshing, well-crafted, and the perfect complement to the meal. Our server, Geoff, was fantastic. He was attentive, friendly, and made the entire experience feel welcoming without ever being intrusive. His recommendations were spot on and added to an already great evening. The views were spectacular and truly elevated the experience. Between the incredible food, outstanding service, and beautiful setting, this was a five-star night from start to finish. Highly recommend.

We had a reservation and we were seated quickly on a Saturday. The service is absolutely phenomenal, everyone’s so kind and attentive. The calamari is amazingly flavoured and textured. The mahi-mahi is so mouthwatering!! We are extremely impressed by the fish dishes and the cocktails – the cocktails all taste delicious (we tried 3 of them). We were also celebrating a birthday and their cake is amazing. Not to mention we had a breath taking beach view. Best experience from start to finish.

We went for dinner on recommendation of a friend, unfortunately we were extremely disappointed in our meal, though the service was wonderful at the bar. We ordered drinks, which considering the price were just okay- nothing that blew out socks off. The real displeasure came with the food. We shared the Hurricane calamari (the cook on these were poor with uneven coating, soggy and bland despite the peppers and sauces). Our main was the crab topped macadamia crusted mahi mahi. There was nothing identifiable as macadamia on our plate and only a couple small bits of crab; the portion was tiny for s $51 meal (other establishments provided 3 generous mahi mahi portions for less), the sauce was very watery and tasteless, and the rice was devoid of flavor. We also ordered a side of risotto. It was the worst risotto I've ever had; it was not creamy at all, lacked flavor, and was cooked improperly with no al dente bite to the rice and came to the table cold. You'd get a better tasting risotto from a pre-packaged mix from Aldi. (if you want an outstanding risotto go to Kalapawai Market in Kapolei- their lemongrass risotto is delicious, creamy, and cooked to perfection!). We had a side of Brussels sprouts as well, shown on menu as herbed but they were overly spicy (even for my partner who loves heat); they did get the roast on these correct, though. It's truly shocking how bad this meal was and I feel because it's at the Outrigger, they know people will go for the name and ambiance/decor.

This has become my favorite restaurant in Honolulu. I know Duke’s Waikiki is highly recommended but I went to Hula twice during my 7 day stay in Waikiki. The host Paco is amazing. It was my birthday and he gave me and my boyfriend a grad booth. The Mai Tai is so fresh that you barely feel sugar. Their seafood is definitely good but I fell in love with their mushroom ravioli. Never had such great ravioli in life. Definitely try it. It’s full of flavors. I licked off the whole plate. And since it was my birthday, they generously gave us the Hula Pie for free. Thanks Paco and Hula staff for making my birthday special. Definitely coming back here.

If you want to eat somewhere with a beautiful view of the ocean this is the place! If you are lucky enough to get a table along the balcony they are the best. Everything we’ve gotten here has been delicious. Most recently we went for breakfast on Christmas day and it was wonderful. I got my favorite Bloody Mary served in a super cute tiki glass and the chef special waffles which were blueberry haupia flavored. My husband got their Macadamia Nut Banana Pancakes. Everything was great! We come back every time we are in waikiki.
