Overview & Vibe

For over 60 years, Home Maid Bakery has been a cornerstone of the Maui community. Tucked away on Lower Main Street in Wailuku, this humble, no-frills establishment is where locals go for authentic, old-school Hawaiian treats. The vibe is strictly 'grab-and-go'—you won't find white-tablecloth service or ocean views here. Instead, you'll find the comforting, buttery aroma of fresh-baked goods and a rotating display case filled with local staples. It is a true Maui institution, reflecting the island's melting-pot history through its diverse selection of pastries and snacks.

Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes

While the bakery offers an extensive selection, a few items stand out as non-negotiable stops on any Maui food tour:

 • Fresh Malasadas: These Portuguese-style fried donuts are the stuff of legends. Crispy on the outside, light and airy on the inside, and generously dusted with granulated sugar, they are a morning must. Pro-tip: Get there before 10:00 AM; these hot-ticket items sell out fast.
 • Manju: A cultural staple, these flaky, pastry-encased delights come with various fillings. From classic black bean to local favorites like sweet potato (imo) and coconut, they provide a perfect balance of texture and subtle sweetness.
 • Assorted Mochis: Celebrated for their perfect 'chew,' these mochi treats are nuanced in flavor and never overly saccharine. They offer an ideal pick-me-up for those exploring the Wailuku or Iao Valley areas.
 • Sweet Rolls: Look for the taro or guava-infused rolls. These are soft, pillowy, and capture the essence of island flavors in every bite.

Insider Dining & Tips

Home Maid Bakery is not a place for lingering, so come with a plan. Because it is a local staple, the morning rush can be significant. If you are specifically chasing the fresh malasadas, aim to arrive between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. If you arrive later in the day, expect a smaller selection, though the pre-packaged manju and cookies are always available. Do not be intimidated by the humble atmosphere—this is authentic Maui at its most honest.

Location & Parking

Located at 1005 Lower Main St in Wailuku, the bakery is easily accessible if you are heading toward Iao Valley State Monument or the North Shore. Parking is available in the small lot directly in front of the building. Because this is a high-traffic spot for local commuters, be prepared for a quick turnover in parking spots. It is a perfect quick stop to fuel up before a day of hiking or sightseeing.

Didn't try their malasadas

We stopped by this bakery to get a snack as we made our way to Paia. We were mainly curious about the manju which are a crispy, flaky crust pasty with a little bit of filling such as sweet potato, beans, coconut, etc. We wanted to try the black bean manju but they only had the larger size pack which was too much for us, instead we got sweet potato (imo). We also got a coconut filled sweet bun. Both pastries were ok but the amount of filling in both was so small, it was disappointing. Also the older lady at the counter was very uptight and not friendly, don't try to ask her any questions while she reads her newspaper unless you want to get the evil eye! lol Apparently they're known for their malasadas but we didn't try any since we had plenty with the manju and sweet buns.

Malasada Heaven

This bakery is a staple to Maui life for over 50 years. The malasadas are made fresh daily but usually don't last past 10:00, We loved the baked goods but not quite worth the drive from Kaanapali Beach.

AMAZING quality and price

Absolutely amazing baked goods. Everything from taro/guava/sweet rolls to an amazing assortment of mochis (perfect, not too sweet, but still flavorful and amazing texture), to quality coffee, malasadas, and more. They also have to-go meals that you can have for lunch or dinner.

Love this little place and I hope to come back one day. Also, you can't beat the price, but I would have happily shopped here even if things were a bit more expensive.
