About
Upcountry Flavor at the Edge of the Crater
Perched on the slopes of Haleakala, Stewz Burgers brings a no-frills, high-impact dining experience to the heart of Kula. This isn't your polished resort fare; it’s a rugged, flavor-forward stop where the air is noticeably cooler and the breeze carries the scent of mountain eucalyptus. Expect the occasional wait—the space is compact, and the popularity of their oversized, dripping-with-juices patties means you might find yourself balancing your tray on a weathered outdoor picnic table while the mist rolls in from the clouds.
The Menu: Where Local Beef Meets Bold Creations
The kitchen leans into hearty, scratch-made comfort. The signature here is the decadence of their specialty burgers, which favor thick, flame-grilled beef topped with unconventional pairings like pineapple, teriyaki, or rich bacon jam. They don't shy away from seasoning, and the buns are toasted just enough to hold up against the generous drippings. Pair your meal with their hand-cut fries, which arrive hot, golden, and often heavily salted—a perfect caloric recharge for those finishing a day of hiking the nearby crater trails.
Why Make the Trip to Kula?
You go to Stewz for the authenticity of Upcountry Maui. It is the antithesis of the manicured beachfront bistro. You’ll hear the chatter of local farmers and cyclists catching their breath, and you might have to navigate tight parking depending on the time of day. It is an honest, straightforward spot designed for those who value the grit of a well-made, messy burger over white-tablecloth service. If you are exploring the botanicals of Ali'i Kula Lavender or making the descent from the summit, this is the essential stop to ground your journey in real island life.

Came here at 11:30 when they said they would be open after biking Haleakala. In need of food but there wasn’t anyone to be seen and all gates were closed. To whomever owns this place if your opening hours stated are not correct ie 11:30am then you should change them… If you are in search of good food from a restaurant that actually abides by their opening times I highly suggest the Kula Marketplace food truck which is right down the road. Given Stewz response to this review I highly doubt they make good food and have already shown they don’t have any once of service. Even if I came back and was starving I wouldn’t bother with this one.

Stumbled upon this absolute gem of a burger place. Half food truck half restaurant. Best burgers we’ve had in the past 30 years of visiting Maui. Best tasting burgers and fries. Fresh and flavorful toppings. Will definitely visit again!

The burgers are big. Lots of flavor. Food is extremely fresh and is of excellent quality. Great tasting crisp fresh fries as well. Location is very nice - there's a parking lot that fits several cars and several picnic tables for seating. There's also some indoor seating as well. Conveniently located on the way down from Haleakala summit.

One of the best burgers I’ve had on Maui! We stopped at STEWZ while visiting Haleakala, and it was perfect. The “Kihei” burger (grass-fed beef with bacon, cheddar, onion rings, and BBQ sauce) was flavorful and juicy, with crispy fries on the side. It’s a cute food truck with both indoor and outdoor seating, surrounded by the farmers market where you can browse local crafts and products. A delicious and fun upcountry stop!

A great burger after a decent hike at the summit. It was nice to have an option to get a bite to eat after winding our way down from the top.

Don’t miss a stop here on your way up or down from Haleakala. My son and I had lunch here. The burgers are fantastic. Prices are fairly reasonable by Maui standards, and the guy that was running the place was very pleasant to talk with. The shop next to the food truck has tables and the place was very clean. They also have some local items for sale there.

Excellent place to stop for local gourmet grass fed burgers, fries, chicken fingers, coffee, local sodas, and milkshakes on the drive back down from Haekelea National Park. Highly recommend the burger with pineapple, bacon, and teriyaki, and the one with cheddar, bacon, onion rings, and barbecue sauce. Super clean and wonderfully kind service.

After an unforgettable hike on the Haleakalā trail, I stopped by this cozy café — and it was the perfect ending to a perfect day. I ordered a burger, a hot dog, and a coffee, and honestly, everything was incredible. The burger tasted homemade, the hot dog was juicy and flavorful, and the coffee… just wow — rich, smooth, and perfectly brewed. The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home the moment I walked in. You can tell they care about what they do. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting — exactly what you want after a long trek through nature. If you're anywhere near Haleakalā, do yourself a favor and stop by. Great food, amazing people, and coffee that rivals any high-end café. Absolutely five stars from me!

Delicious burger stop. After visiting the national park, we were hungry for some snacks. We were lucky enough to come across Stew‘s burger. It’s well marked and we saw it on the way in and we’re excited to see it on the way out. We ordered a mix of burgers, including the double cheeseburger for myself. The burgers were cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. I like a little bit of greenery with my burger, so I went with the classic my wife opted for the one with onion rings and bacon inside. Sit outside or they have a few chairs inside but the viewer nice and the garden is beautiful and there’s a light breeze to enjoy while you’re devouring your burger.

This story starts off with my family being extremely hungry after coming down from Haleakala. I had to look at the price more than once, it wasn’t cheap, but I figured it would be worth it . When the burger came out I saw a glistening mountain of meat, onions, tomatoes and lettuce, you get what you pay for here. These burgers aren’t just food, they’re an adventure in your mouth. I recommend anyone going to Haleakala to make the stop and support this small business.
