About
A Taste of Upcountry Heritage
Perched on the slopes of Haleakalā, the Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill serves as a historical waypoint for those winding their way toward the back side of Maui. The air here is noticeably cooler than at sea level, carrying the faint, grassy scent of expansive pastures. It is a place where the history of Maui’s cattle industry meets the modern plate, occupying a building that dates back to the mid-19th century when it served as the Rose Ranch post office.
Legendary Venison and Ranch-to-Table Roots
The menu is defined by the land itself. Most visitors make the trek specifically for the venison burger, crafted from wild axis deer that roam the surrounding hillsides. It is lean, earthy, and arguably one of the most authentic farm-to-table experiences you will find in Kula. The kitchen also specializes in local beef, delivering a hearty, no-frills meal that feels like a reward after a long drive through the island's interior.
The Atmosphere
Don't expect white tablecloths; the setup is casual, centered on picnic-style seating that encourages you to linger and watch the clouds shift across the valley floor. It is a favorite haunt for locals looking for a quiet lunch, though the porch can get bustling on weekends as hikers and road-trippers stop for a reprieve. Be mindful that the wind can pick up suddenly as you eat, and the limited parking requires a bit of patience during the midday rush. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading to the nearby MauiWine vineyard or simply seeking a panoramic view of the coastline, this grill offers a quiet, rugged charm that is becoming increasingly rare across the island.

We enjoyed this stop along the upcountry road. Hubby had the venison burger. I bought the most amazing smelling tropical candles here. Just simply a great little side of the road stop.

Stopped by after a long day and had the special, a blue cheese burger, and my partner got the kalbi plate. The burger and plate were amazing, cooked perfectly, just fantastic. However I also got an order of wedges with my order and they were horrible, don’t bother with them. I’ll absolutely stop by again and enjoy the nice patio.

So we drove out here last week Wednesday just to get out of the house and it was a beautiful day. So decided to put the top down on the car and go visit some spots on the way out to the ranch store. When we got there you could already smell the grill. They have a lot of great stuff in the store especially if you are visiting Maui from somewhere else it is a great place to pickup a souvenir. We were there for lunch so we ordered an order of chili and rice and then they had a special avocado bacon burger which also comes with tomatoes lettuce and onions. I have to say one of the best burgers on the island grilled to perfection with a nice soft bun and fresh veggies. The chili and rich has your local sticky rice and the chili had big chunks of beef and beans in a tomato chili base. Both were delicious and the reason we keep stopping by. The view and the burger are definitely worth the drive.

Lots of places to sit. Lots of varieties of meats. Elk was not too bad! Beef burger was also really good. Open grill bbq you can smell it up the road!! Also look how clean they keep the prep area (very nice to see) It’s always good to do lunch here and then Maui wine across the street for some wine sampling. Perfect afternoon!

Very cool stop if youre venturing to the south end of Maui. Very few places to stop for food or snacks on this route. Burger was a bit overdone but was fine and this is a must stop. Store is very western themed. Has a Cracker Barrel asthetic.

Loved the world famous Ulupalakua Ranch in Maui's Upcountry off Kula Highway. The Ranch Store is across street from the winery. Ranch Store offers beef, elk or venison burgers. Beef is their signature Maui Cattle Company brand and elk is raised and processed on ranch, venison is Axis Deer, also local harvest. They can get really super busy, so plan accordingly. Retail store inside has all kinds of touristy things, clothing and other items. Great place. Worth the drive. Plenty of free parking. Outdoor dining spaces with beautiful view.

We actually sat down at another establishment just down the road but decided to come here as I will always choose lunch over breakfast any day. ATMOSPHERE: Located far from civilization on the southeast slopes of Mt. Haleakala sits the quaint and charming building. The front porch features smoothed tree stumps with counter seating, and umbrella-protected outdoor picnic tables on either side of restaurant. They've finally added a sink to wash your hands! The peaceful landscape of Ulupalakua and killer bi-coastal views of Central Maui are the gorgeous backdrops. The inside is reminiscent of an old country mercantile, selling cowboy wear, Ulupalakua Ranch logo wear, snacks and knick knacks. MENU: A sole salad, burgers (choose from venison, beef, lamb, elk and taro), plate lunches (hamburger steak, kalbi ribs, chili & rice, hot dog). FOOD: Beef Burger I was wanting to try the elk burger but they were out. All of the beef is locally raised at Maui Cattle Company, so you can't get a fresher burger than this! I opted for cheddar cheese, and added roasted mushrooms and caramelized onions. The bun was nicely toasted and the burger juicy, tasty and cooked perfect to my medium-temperature request. The amount of toppings were very generous and added at least a half inch to its thickness. Absolutely delish! Elk Burger I did get to try it on another visit. No gaminess and tasted similar to beef. Potato Wedges The tray of wedges were lightly seasoned and came with an amazing dipping sauce which was a mixture of mayo, basil, garlic, basil, lemon juice and other unknown spices. The portion was enough for two to share. SERVICE: Order your food at the kitchen counter, pay at the main register and take a seat. The grill is on the side lanai, so listen for your name to be called and grab your food there. Condiments were plentiful and well-stocked. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. OVERALL: Highly recommended for the burger fan. Definitely worth the trek.

An adventure for lunch. It’s a bit of a hike to get here in the car. We started from Kihei so it took an hour each way. Glad we stopped there because the burger was amazing and the drive was too. I had the lamb burger and it was delicious. My wife had the regular burger and that was good too!

Located on the back road to Hana even if you don’t want to drive all the way to Hana this road is quite an experience on the residential area of Kula passing the ranches and farms. This store is located across the Maui wine shop they do have fresh lamb or beef meat, you can customize your burger and it’s cooked on order. Amazing farm to table experience.

This is the best burger place in Maui. Disclosure: I haven't tried every burger, and there may be better burgers places. It is a bit of a drive to get here, but it is so good. The meat has a genuine beefy taste. Before you go to Cheese Burger in Paradise, come here. There is more effort to get here, but it is worth it.
