Higher Ground Cafe
About
A Morning Essential in Kula’s Rolling Hills
When you find yourself winding up the slopes of Haleakalā, the brisk mountain air calls for a warm drink and something substantial. Higher Ground Cafe has become a staple for locals and travelers navigating the Upcountry landscape. It is not a place for a hurried grab-and-go; it is a spot to slow down while looking out over the panoramic vistas that define this side of Maui.
The Upcountry Palate
The menu highlights local ingredients, focusing on hearty breakfast staples that fuel a day of exploring the crater or the botanical gardens nearby. You will find fresh smoothies that capture the island’s tropical bounty and baked goods that are often still warm from the oven. Their coffee program is serious business, serving as a necessary jolt before the steep drive ahead. The aroma of roasted beans blends perfectly with the scent of damp, lush earth drifting in from the Kula gardens.
Why We Keep Coming Back
The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious. It feels like a living room for the community, where the chatter of regulars mingles with the clinking of ceramic mugs. Expect a bit of a tight squeeze near the counter during the mid-morning rush, as this is the primary fueling station for those heading toward the summit. If you snag a seat by the window, the fog rolling over the greenery provides an ever-changing backdrop to your meal. It’s exactly the kind of unpolished, authentic Kula charm that makes the long drive worth the trip.

We stopped at the Kula Lodge restaurant and were incredibly impressed. The view was amazing even on an overcast day and the service was excellent. We tried the onion soup and it was such a good start to our meal with a delicious generous portion of puff pastry on top. Then we had the prawns, the server did let us know they came with the shells on but the 2 seconds of effort to remove them was so worth the incredible flavor. I can’t imagine anyone complaining about something so small but clearly people have. My husband had the chicken and waffles and was so pleased with how crispy and tender the chicken was and the fluffiness of the waffles. I just wish I had caught the server’s name because she was so kind and helpful. Would definitely recommend, you won’t be disappointed

Came back 4 years later and was sad to see the restaurant burnt down. Ate at the food truck there and food was epic, vibes were awesome

We had lunch at Kula Lodge on our way to the national park. We each had the chicken and waffles, a specialty there, and it was wonderful. The setting is beautiful with an incredible mountain overview and lush tropical garden. Highly recommend for a side trip while on Maui.

We came to breakfast at the lodge restaurant but unfortunately it seems that the restaurant had a fire 3 months ago. So we got breakfast sandwiches at their food truck (which is right next to where the lodge restaurant was location - same parking lot).
