Overview & Vibe

Nalu Kai Grill and Bar, perched elegantly in Princeville, Kauai, offers one of the most iconic vantage points on the island. Overlooking the legendary Hanalei Bay, this poolside venue serves as a serene escape for those looking to pair Hawaiian-influenced cuisine with dramatic coastal views. By day, the atmosphere is bright and breezy, centered around the shimmering pool deck. As the sun dips below the horizon, the venue transforms into an intimate setting, lit by the warm, flickering glow of tiki torches that illuminate the property, creating a quintessential Hawaiian evening atmosphere.

Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes

The culinary philosophy at Nalu Kai focuses on light, approachable island fare designed to be enjoyed while lounging. While the menu is premium, specific items consistently draw attention:

 • Signature Fresh Catch Sandwich: A classic island staple featuring locally sourced Mahi Mahi. When executed perfectly, the grill marks provide a smoky contrast to the tender, flaky fish, served on a toasted bun with fresh greens.
 • Hand-Crafted Mai Tai: No visit to the North Shore is complete without a classic Mai Tai. Nalu Kai’s version is a tropical staple, intended to be sipped slowly while overlooking the expansive blue of the Pacific.
 • Poolside Tropical Refreshers: The menu emphasizes light, cold bites—perfect for those who prefer to stay poolside and soak up the Kauai sunshine without a formal sit-down meal.

Insider Dining & Tips

For the best experience at Nalu Kai, timing is everything. While it is primarily a casual poolside venue, demand can spike during sunset hours when guests flock to the deck for the evening views. Because it serves as a primary amenity for hotel guests, we highly recommend arriving early or checking on daily availability if you are visiting from off-site. The experience is best enjoyed as a "sunset session" rather than a hurried lunch; grab a seat in the gazebo or one of the dining cabanas to fully embrace the relaxed pace of island life.

Location & Parking

Nalu Kai Grill and Bar is located at 5520 Ka Haku Rd, within the grounds of the resort in Princeville. Guests should follow signs for the resort property. Valet parking is generally the standard for this location, though it is worth inquiring about validation if you are dining at the restaurant. Its proximity to Hanalei Bay makes it an excellent stop after a day of beach hopping or exploring the lush cliffs of the North Shore.

Good Food on a beautiful setting near the pool and koi pond of the Westin

Ive eaten here many times. Full disclosure, my daughter is a server at the restaurant. The food is good but a little pricy. My favorite time to eat there is at night when all of the tiki torches are glowing around the property.

Pool Restaurant

Had lunch at the pool restaurant. Our server was cordial and the view spectacular. The pool area looked dingy with mildew on canvas surfaces and the General feel the area had not been cleaned properly in a while. The bathroom was partially nasty with no soap in the pumps.
Had the $27 “fresh catch” sandwich and a $20 Mai Tai, pricy but not unexpected. The bun was stale, the fish looked like it had been reheated rather than freshly grilled and was tough. Unusual for Mahi Mahi. The drink was truly lackluster and the fruit garnish was old and discolored. The side Salic was good.
We had the impression that the season was over, a renovation was pending and the care level was not there. Would not venture back.

The food is solid, but the prices are OBSCENE

We always eat at this casual poolside cafe inside the Princeville Hotel (formerly St Regis), but the prices are so obscenely high that this will be our last visit. We know Hawaii is expensive, but there is a line and this hotel has crossed over from high to a rip-off. They are more expensive than the Four Seasons on the Big Island, who serves much better cuisine.

We are saddened that this one-time go to place is now a trap for tourists on site and those visitors looking for a great place to enjoy lunch.
