Overview & Vibe
When you are craving the true essence of Kauai’s coastal lifestyle, look no further than Koloa Fish Market. This humble, no-frills storefront in the heart of Old Koloa Town is a local institution that prioritizes flavor over flash. There is no dining room, no white-tablecloth service, and no ocean view from a chair—but what you get instead is the freshest catch on the island, prepared with the soul of a true Hawaiian neighborhood gem.
Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes
- Fresh Poke Bowls: The undisputed star of the show. Whether you prefer classic Ahi or more adventurous seasonings, their poke is consistently praised for its buttery texture and vibrant, fresh flavor. With almost every option being gluten-free, it is the perfect healthy, high-protein fuel for your beach day.
- Plate Lunches: For a hearty island experience, the plate lunch is a must. Expect generous portions of local staples served alongside savory sides like seaweed salad and steamed rice. It is comfort food that hits the spot after a morning of surfing or hiking.
- Haupia: Don’t walk out without checking the cooler. Their homemade Haupia (coconut milk pudding) comes in large, generous blocks. It is the perfect cooling, creamy treat to finish off your savory meal.
Insider Dining & Tips
Koloa Fish Market is an authentic, fast-paced takeout spot. Because there is no seating, the best strategy is to arrive early, pick up your items, and find a scenic spot nearby to enjoy your meal. Keep in mind that lines can grow quickly around the lunch hour, especially with island visitors discovering this hidden gem. Plan to visit between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM if you want to beat the primary lunch rush, or be prepared to wait patiently in a queue of locals who know exactly why this place is worth it.
Location & Parking
Located at 5482 Koloa Rd in the historic district of Koloa, the market is easily accessible if you are staying on the South Shore of Kauai. Parking is limited to the street and nearby public parking areas within walking distance of Old Koloa Town. After you grab your food, you are just a short drive from Poipu Beach or the Koloa Heritage Trail, making it the ideal headquarters for your afternoon adventures.

Local fish
We were looking for good fish and we found it. The staff was very patient with us as we were unsure as to what to order. The recommendations were good, and we had a great lunch! Be aware that there is no seating at all. We ended up sitting in our car.

Excellent fish and other to-go lunch/meal items
This is your local source for fresh fish and Poke, sides like seaweed salad, and plate lunches.
Particularly, they have several pokes and all but two are Gluten Free!!
The catch of the day is whatever the catch of the day is - for fresh fish, but often Monchong, Ahi or Marlin.
Oh, and check the cooler for Haupia - they have big, fat chunks of this deliciousness that can easily be portioned smaller IF you happen to want to share it with a very good friend.
