Kai Maika’s Light Lunch Delight

Local ‘Niele' Foodie samples one sliver of the transformation to 1 Hanalei Hotel. Growing up with great food and a chapter of restaurant career tucked in my back pocket, I was excited to see how the old Princeville Hotel had evolved under new ownership. By far the most luxurious Hanalei Bay gazing location, I’ve enjoyed and encouraged that joy to others over many versions of this special resort in the last 4+ decades on Kauai. I was hoping for light lunch in the prime lounge terrace location over the surf breaks - (4pm open ) but was directed downstairs to a pool/bay view restaurant, looking ‘mauka' over the bay. I chose a seat at the bar, shift changes, training talk and brand new staff vibe - but each encountered so cheerful and friendly. The bar fronts a lap pool and one is simply transfixed by the view. I asked for the coldest white wine and was provided with a sample of crisp Sauvignon Blanc - first choice. I then ordered the chop salad and was presented with a beautiful painting in a bowl - no frills, all edible and lightly seasoned myriad of textures. Just right for crunchy fresh satisfaction. Still some construction going on but the Hotel is beautiful and the changes are modern and chic. Can't wait to go back up north and experience the sunset lounge next trip.
