Overview & Vibe

Located in the heart of The Shops at Kukui'ula, Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi is a culinary landmark on Kauai's South Shore. The restaurant pays homage to Hawaii's rich plantation-era history, blending the diverse flavors of the islands' early immigrant communities with the modern, refined techniques of a James Beard Award-winning chef. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet inviting, characterized by high ceilings, open-air seating that captures the gentle trade winds, and a decor that feels both rustic and upscale. It is widely considered the go-to spot for those seeking an authentic taste of Kauai's contemporary dining scene.

Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes

The menu is a testament to the farm-to-table philosophy that defines Hawaii's best kitchens. Guests frequently rave about the following signature items:

  • Braised Short Ribs: These are arguably the most tender short ribs on the island, slow-cooked to perfection and melt-in-your-mouth tender, showcasing deep, savory flavors.
  • Butterfish: A quintessential Hawaii dish, prepared with Roy’s signature touch to ensure a buttery texture that practically dissolves on the palate.
  • Deep-Fried Brussels Sprouts & Cauliflower: A surprising fan-favorite, these vegetables are elevated with precise frying and seasonings, making them a dream-come-true for veggie lovers.
  • Ube Tres Leches Cake: A light, airy, and visually stunning dessert that provides the perfect sweet ending to any meal.

Insider Dining & Tips

Because Eating House 1849 is a staple for both residents and visitors, reservations are highly recommended. For parties of four or fewer, utilize online booking systems well in advance—ideally two to three weeks before your trip. For parties of five or more, you must call the restaurant directly; be prepared to provide a credit card to secure your booking, as they enforce a 24-hour cancellation policy to manage demand. If you find yourself without a reservation, arriving early for Happy Hour is a great strategy to enjoy the ambiance and a few signature appetizers without the full dinner commitment.

Location & Parking

The restaurant is situated within the upscale Shops at Kukui'ula in Koloa. Parking is convenient and stress-free, with a large, complimentary surface lot located just steps away from the restaurant entrance. The shopping center itself is a beautiful destination, offering easy access to boutiques and artisanal shops before or after your meal. It is perfectly positioned for those staying in the Poipu resort area, making it a seamless addition to your South Shore itinerary.

Good food but great desserts

Wife and I went during their Restaurant week so we started with the Spring rolls that were okay then the Kampachi Crudo which was soso {better at Roys Waikiki} then the Restaurant week Poke tostada and that was pretty good followed by a Pork shank which was so tender and tasty but the bed of rice was too salty. Best part of our meal was dessert which was an Ube Tres letches cake so so light and tasty, best dessert of our 15 day vacation followed close behind by the Strawberry Cheese cake and we got a Chocolate fudge square that was also delicious. Thank you to our server Sage she was excellent a number 1 server. We may return for Happy hour but for a meal I think we prefer Roys.

Great Attentive Bus Boy With The Water

The bus boy was very attentive with filling up the water, I loved that since I was very thirsty and drank a lot of the water. Our waitress , Ashley M 'knows her stuff. I am glad she told us how to eat the green beans like, that they serve instead of bread. This was our 10th time to Poipu Beach and our first time eating here. 1-10 I give it a 9-, a pretty great restaurant. The Potstickers was real good. The Pina Colada was good. The Caesar salad was good, and the farm salad was different, but good. The fried chicken was good and the souffle was real good.

Consistently Excellent

Food, service, and atmosphere are consistently excellent. A little pricy, but average for an good restaurant in Hawaii. The wait staff is superb. The taste of the dishes is consistenly fabululous. It is our go-to place on the South Shore of Kauai. The braised ribs are the most tender we've had. The deep-fried Brussel sprouts and cauliflower are a dream-come-true. The butter fish is a must-have. Kudos to the chef and management.
