A Taste of Old Hawaii in Kapolei

Stepping into Young's Fish Market, you are immediately greeted by the unmistakable, savory aroma of slow-cooked kalua pork and smoky pipikaula. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is where locals go for honest, no-frills Hawaiian soul food. The bustling energy of the room reflects a legacy that dates back to their original Kalihi roots, bringing that same neighborhood charm to the West side of Oahu.

The Signature Island Flavors

The star of the show is undoubtedly the lau lau, featuring pork and butterfish steamed in ti leaves until the meat becomes tender enough to fall apart at the touch of a fork. Pair your plate with a side of fresh poi or their famous lomi salmon, which provides a cooling, acidic contrast to the rich, salty meats. If you prefer a bit of chew, their house-made pipikaula is dried to perfection and carries a deep, beefy intensity that keeps regulars coming back.

What to Expect

Whether you are stopping by during a busy lunch hour or grabbing a family-style meal to go, the service is efficient and straightforward. While the dining area can get quite lively and loud during peak hours, it only adds to the community-centric atmosphere of this Kapolei fixture. Keep in mind that finding a parking spot can occasionally feel like a minor sport when the lunch rush hits, but the reward of a steaming, authentic Hawaiian meal makes the short wait well worth the effort. It is the ideal spot for anyone looking to bypass the tourist traps and eat like a true local.

Really good Hawaiian food! I ordered the butterfish Lau Lau plate with a side of tripe stew. The butterfish in the Lau Lau was so ono but there was so little of it, it was mostly greens. Luckily the greens were good. But I want meat! The pipikaula was delicious and tender. The tripe stew was also very tasty! I'd give this place a 4.5* for the food if I could. The guy at the counter was nice, and the restaurant itself was a little dark, but cozy. Ono Hawaiian food! It's a shame they're closing. At least they have another location in Kalihi for my Lau Lau fix.

Quick stop for lunch on business. A freestanding restaurant in a power shopping center. Served typical Hawaiian food. Not the best I have enjoyed on Oahu but not awful. Counter service. Ehh ok.

I CAN'T BELIEVE this place is right in Kapolei! If you been here few times or more, you'll know there aren't a lot of good authentic homie foods. And this place was EXCELLENT, DELICIOUS, and AFFORDABLE! I felt like I just had a great home cook meal made with a lot of loves!I went an hour before closing but foods still taste fresh, juice, and right amount of fat. Definitely will go back to try the beef and poi! You don't need to go all the way to Helena's for authentic Hawaiian foods. Please just check it and you'll fall in love. I got the mini Laulau plate that's great for one person(recommended by the young man which I really appreciated)!!! Mahalo for the great foods!! And make sure to leave a tip EVEN you are ordering take out because they deserve it and it seems like a family run. I was told they have another location especially if you want to order a traditional ROASTED PORK!

Authentic Island Food. Not quite a fish market but a large selection of local food. The prices are extremely fair and the servings are of large portions. I did not like the poke here and would not recommend it. The beef stew was hearty and full of flavor (see pic) not really visually stunning but tasted great. Huge chunks of tender slow cooked beef, stew and poured upon a large bed of rice for $14.99 a plate. The turkey tails (see pic) are sold by the pound either chopped or whole for $9.95 per lb. Good flavor and cooked perfectly. The butterfish laulau was interesting and flavorful. Slow cooked to the point where the bones even melted in your mouth. $11 You place your order, pay at the counter, get your food and grab a table. No alcohol here and a small selection of soft drinks are available. Parking is free and easy to find outside.

Always great Hawaiian food here!! I had Uncle Al's Hawaiian bento. (I think 🤔 that's what it was called) It wasn't a big plate, because I don't eat much. It was perfect!! I bought 1/2 pound of roasted turkey tails, too. I also got their li hing mui gummy bears for dessert. That was so yummy!! I love the fact that their located in Kapolei. I don't have to drive downtown to eat delicious Hawaiian food...

Best lau lau I’ve ever had, and the pipikaula was perfection! The chicken long rice i got kinda tasted dry like it was the bottom of the barrel, but I’m willing to try again because the rest of the food was absolute perfection. Seriously, BEST lau lau.

Yesterday was muy forrar day un Hawaii and decided to try a poke bowl. I had high expectations but it was just okay, I thought that I was going to have authentic traditional poke but it was more like poke from a chain restaurant. 3/5 not bad not great. Since there are covid restrictions there were a handful of tables available and the vibe wasn't great

Pretty good place. Went here when other places were really busy. Ended up getting the kalua pork because the laulau was sold out. It was really good and went great with a side of chicken long rice. However, the spicy ahi bowl was a little disappointing. Not enough spice, and didn't have much flavor. I had to dump shoyu on it. Maybe they do it that way on purpose? The tripe stew was excellent though! Tomato-based and super soft! Hoping to return one day to try the meats.

Wow, their laulau is massive and sooo good! I always get the mini plate #1 and it's always more than enough food that I have to take it home and finish it later. I've been there 3 times and only tried the pork laulau. I believe they have butterfish laulau on Tuesday and Friday so I'm trying to find time to go in and try it. The poke is fresh; lomi salmon and mac salad tastes the way it should. My son likes to get the pipikaula and kalua pig. Only giving them 4 stars because of the 3 times I came still never have pickled onion, and I really love squid luau, but their recipe is different (not as sweet and creamy like I'm used to), but to each their own taste. Order at the register and seat yourself kind of place. The service is friendly enough and the restaurant is still new so everything is nice and clean.
