About
A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of West Oahu
Finding authentic Japanese cuisine in Kapolei can feel like a hunt, but Waka Sakura Sushi Restaurant brings a precise, focused approach to the table. As soon as you step inside, the sharp scent of seasoned sushi rice and the faint, briny aroma of nori greet you. It is a no-frills, functional space where the spotlight is strictly on the quality of the fish rather than interior design trends.
Mastering the Cut
The kitchen leans into traditional preparation methods. Their signature rolls often feature thick, generous cuts of hamachi and ahi that highlight the sourcing standards they maintain for the Kapolei community. You will notice the chefs prioritize temperature control, ensuring every piece of sashimi arrives with that signature firm, cool texture that separates high-end preparation from standard local spots.
The Local Dining Experience
This is the kind of neighborhood spot designed for a quick mid-week dinner or a relaxed Friday night hangout. The acoustics can get quite lively when the restaurant is full, as the sound bounces off the clean, minimalist surfaces, creating a communal buzz that feels energetic rather than chaotic. While the parking lot in the surrounding retail hub can test your patience during peak hours, the reward is a menu that avoids unnecessary fusion clutter, opting instead for clean, high-quality Japanese staples. Whether you are looking for a reliable chirashi bowl or a specialty roll, the consistency here remains a pillar for sushi lovers across the Leeward coast.

Let me start off with the food. It was over priced for sushi that can be purchased just down the road at a reasonable price. I was not a fan of brown rice in my sushi. To order you must use your cell phone or the tablet on the table. Please be aware that the tablet does not move from its location, making it a little hard to operate. The touch screen is very sensitive and will add items on without you realizing so be careful and double check before submitting. The service was great. The staff was helpful and friendly.

We went at 11 when they opened so there was a small line to get in. Atmosphere is very pleasant. You can order from the stationary tablet on the table or scan a QR code and use your phone. Our orders came very quickly. Food is excellent and fresh. Though I have a feeling it's the same selections you can get from DQ's own fish section which is located on the other side of the back wall. If true, I'm fine with that as I often go to DQ for sushi/sashimi. The only issue I have is the amount of cream cheese they put in one of the sushi we got. I'd put half that amount because all we could taste was the cream cheese. Overall I do recommend this place and would go again.

The food was very delicious, but the coolest thing was how incredibly fast they prepared everything. About a minute after ordering and the conveyor belt was already right in front of you. It was such a pleasure that I even wanted to order gradually just to enjoy the food while it was still warm. My friend ordered a beer. I’m not really a beer lover, but he let me try it, and to my surprise, I really liked it. The place has a great atmosphere. The only downside was that there was constantly not enough soy sauce. Each barrel had just a little bit in it, and it was hard to find a waiter 😀 We had to walk around and collect soy sauce from neighboring tables. I won’t lower the rating because of this, but I hope you will take this comment into consideration. Thank you for the delicious food and the fast service 🙂
