Kalapawai Cafe & Deli (service that has made our two Kailua locations into perennial Hale)
About
A Culinary Staple Comes to the West Side
Stepping into Kalapawai Cafe & Deli in Kapolei feels like a continuation of the brand’s storied legacy that began with its historic roots in Kailua. The transition to the growing Second City of Oahu brings a sophisticated yet relaxed approach to island-inspired comfort food, making it an essential stop for locals looking for a reliable lunch or a polished dinner.
The Flavor of the Islands
The menu highlights locally sourced ingredients, showcasing a commitment to regional freshness. Diners frequently praise the signature Furikake-crusted catch, which perfectly balances a crispy, savory exterior with the tender, flaky texture of fresh-caught fish. The kitchen also leans into hearty, satisfying plates like their slow-roasted short ribs, which fall off the bone amidst a rich reduction. You will likely hear the low hum of conversation bouncing off the open, airy interior, creating a social environment that suits both quick business lunches and slow-paced family dinners.
Setting and Service
The aesthetic embraces the airy, industrial vibe common in new Kapolei developments, with high ceilings and wide windows that invite natural light to flood the dining room. It’s an ideal choice for groups who appreciate a menu that bridges the gap between casual deli expectations and upscale bistro execution. A minor heads-up for those visiting during peak evening hours: the space can get quite energetic and loud, so if you are planning an intimate conversation, you might prefer a table toward the back or an earlier time slot. Despite the bustling pace, the staff maintains the attentive, friendly service that has defined the brand for decades across the island.

Stopped by for desert ONLY. I enjoyed a nice bread pudding. The Bartender & wait staff were friendly & welcoming. The food menu is creative & locals say the food is awesome. On the LAST Sunday of the month wine & sprit tasting is featured and staff from wineries and distillerys are present to educate you on the fermentation process & answer any questions you may have .

All the things that mattered were very good! It was just the flies, because you have indoor/outdoor seating the flies like to invite themselves over. If they had little fans you put on the table to keep the flies away it would have be perfect! I would go there again because it was delicious! I had the pork chop with mango chutney, best pork chop I ever had in my life! Brussel Sprouts phenomenal! Oh, and Cesar Salad, Awesome!

Over all good experience. It really is good food, its just the pricing is a little off. They dont offer any "combos" on any entree items. So they individually charge for a side and beverage. I paid $18 for a burger that didn't come with fries or a drink, which was another $7 just for that. NOT worth that much for a dish that should have came with fries. I would have paid $20 for the full burger meal, not $27 dollars. Sorry if it seems like im being "cheap" or whatever you want to say. This is just my opinion. So a family of 4 all getting a dish with having to BUY a side will be over $100, not including if you were to buy alcohol. So like I said, pricing was off for sure. The food was GREAT! I will say that! Which is why this is still a 4 Star Post. The brownie was amazing! I would for sure get pastries or maybe a different dish. But not offering a combo and having to pay for fries was not cool. It should have been $3 if it was like loaded fries or something "extra". So, all in all, 4/5.

Kalapawai Cafe & Deli is one of those easy casual spots that works fine but does not really stand out. Parking is not bad which already makes it more convenient than a lot of places. The setup is simple. You order at the counter and then find a seat which keeps things moving without much hassle. There is also a small separate bar area with its own ordering if you are just stopping in for drinks. The food falls into the average to mid category. Nothing bad, just nothing that really makes you want to come back specifically for it. It gets the job done if you are hungry but it is not memorable. For a family of four we spent about $80 which feels a little high for what you get considering the quality. Overall Kalapawai Cafe and Deli is a decent option if you are nearby and want something quick and easy. Just go in with realistic expectations and you will be fine.

So happy to have Kalapawai on the West side!! The food is so delicious and that’s not a joke. Everything we have tried here has been terrific! For lunch you order at the counter and they will bring to your table, go dinner you are seated and will receive a menu. Dinner selections are amazing, for appetizers would highly recommend the hummus platter, the carrots are to die for! The only thing I would say to improve the dish is to add a little more of the delicious pita bread. The Poke Nachos are so delicious there is no comparison! The flavors mix together so well, you could eat this as a plate all on its own. This is definitely one of our favorite places to go now. They also have a bar with TV that usually has the sports games playing. A very nice casual restaurant. Highly recommended!!!

I have been eating at Kalapawai for years now and have never had a poor experience. The dinner menu is very impressive and they are very accommodating to my family’s allergies and celiac disease! My only complaints would be service members could be more friendly and during dinner time the outside seating can be quite hot so I would be prepared for that!

We've been here several times but this time we went twice in a week about 6p. First time it was with my husband and niece. Second time was with some friends. Love the casual atmosphere. We had the poke nachos is ok but I like how crispy the chips were. Love the seafood dishes. My husband loves when they have lamb specials. The desserts are decent. The drinks are OK.
