Texas Traditions in West Oahu

Finding genuine pit-smoked barbecue in the heart of Kapolei feels like a rare win. At this local smokehouse, the air carries a thick, hickory-scented greeting the moment you push through the door. It is the kind of place where the scent of brisket—slow-smoked on-site overnight—defines the entire experience. If you are navigating the busy corridors near the Ka Makana Aliʻi area, this spot offers a straightforward, no-frills break from the typical island fare.

The Smokehouse Experience

The menu leans heavily into Texas-style staples. Their beef brisket is carved right in front of you, showing off that characteristic smoke ring, while the pulled pork is consistently moist enough to skip the extra sauce. You’ll find the usual suspects here: creamy mac and cheese, tangy coleslaw, and oversized rolls that arrive warm. It’s an ideal stop for a casual lunch or a high-protein dinner after a day of shopping.

A Local Observation

The space is built for efficiency, making it perfect for families who need a fast, hearty meal without the hassle of a sit-down service. One thing to keep in mind: during peak lunch hours, the line can snake toward the entrance. It moves quickly, but you might find yourself balancing a tray while scouting for an open table. It’s a loud, bustling environment, but that's part of the authentic smokehouse charm. Whether you are grabbing a family pack for a beach picnic or just craving a hefty two-meat plate, they have become a staple for Kapolei residents looking for that specific wood-fired flavor profile that is hard to replicate at home.

I really wanted to like this place - might have been an off day for them, but man was it just chaos today. Had 6 people on the line and 3 of them looked lost, they didn't know what to do. Whether they were new or just incoherent, you could tell there was no organization. I got in around 405pm for a 415pm pick up for an online order, as soon as i stepped in it was chaotic. Had 4 people waiting in the oline orders line and 2 in the cashier line. The front line of workers was unorganized and everyone was either lost or confused. One of the online order customers literally complained that she was waiting an additional 30 minutes on top of her order pickup and the cashier did her best to calm the situation. Afterwards, a line of customers came in, for online orders. One of the workers really stepped it up and started organizing and got the orders situated but the wait was longer than expected. One of the workers asked about my online order and I gave him my name on the order. He then asked if the order was under a different name...the order receipt had my name on it. So not sure what he was looking at but it took another worker to let him know. Bottom line, i got my order, took about an additional 20 minutes but I got it. Missing a lot of the additional items I ordered from the online app, but i didn't want to deal with the chaos. I ordered the 3 meat platter with jalapeño cheese sausage and 2 times brisket. I ordered an extra rib with it but didnt get it. Got a full rack of ribs and made it a plate with green beans and fries, didnt get those either. Also got the burnt ends sandwich with pickles and onions, didnt get the pickles or onions either..... Overall, the ribs were ok. Some were tender fall apart and some were so damn hard and chewy, thought I was eating jerky. The burnt end sandwich was ok...flavorwise, great - but the meat was extremely tough and chewey. The 3 meat platter was good. The sausage was good, the brisket was ok, again, same thing, some were tender and some were tough. I also got the mac n cheese and baked beans. Baked beans were great, kind of reminded me of the ones you get in the can. The mac and cheese, in all honesty, it really tasted like the boston market mac and cheese. Whether its homemade or not, that was just my impression. Not sure if i would go again, but im always willing to give a place a second try, just not any time soon.

Everyone is griping about pretty irrelevant things. Imma tell you bout this food. No smoke ring on the brisket, the brisket is tougher than a roast. It must be a roast cause there is no smokiness, like at least put some liquid smoke in there, where is the bark at? No flavor, terrible texture. Stringy, dry, tough, and bland. It's like a damn dog treat, chewing on the brisket like bubblegum. The chicken was dry too, but it had more flavor at least and thank God you can't make chicken as tough as beef cause y'all would've. The Mac and cheese was actually pretty decent by fast food standards. The owner seems like a great person you engage with the reviews so I kinda feel bad but I gotta be honest. This just ain't BBQ, I've had BBQ 10x as good from a gas station, but I guess there really isn't too many options in Hawaii. Even as not being BBQ this really ain't good in general, like a pot roast has more flavor and texture.

Seperate updated review from the one below I did before. DO NOT DO DELIVERY from here! Packaging is a mess, items like entire ribs missing from orders, drinks missing, paid for additional toppings missing. Packaging also makes the food completely soggy and water logged which ruins the flavor. I even paid for priority delivery so the food was the first delivered. For dine-in: Long lines, a long wait sometimes, and a small place, but everyone was really nice, and the food was good! Sweet tea was a little old tasting, bread needs some flavor like salted butter or honey butter. We'll surely go again!

I went for my birthday. I loved Texas brisket. This was actually the most disgusting, disappointing brisket I have ever had the misfortune of being served. It was not completely smoked. No red smoke ring and beyond tough. I don’t think it was ever on a smoker.

My mom and I wanted to try something new for lunch and ended up at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. We had the barbecue rib plate. It came with 4 fat, juicy ribs, and 2 sides. My mom and I tapped out after 2 ribs. Ono no!

I had to try Dickey’s BBQ pulled pork after seeing it was ranked the best pulled pork sandwich in the country by Eat This, Not That — and wow, they weren’t kidding. The meat was super tender, smoky, and packed with flavor. The sauce hit perfectly, and the bun held up like a champ. Totally lived up to the hype. I’m already planning my next trip back

Tonight was our first time enjoying dinner at dickeys bbq since moving to Hawaii hands down best bbq on island lots of flavor. The owner was very involved in the restaurant talking to customers and helping on the floor which shows a lot about his character we will for sure be coming back!!

YES Dickey's is back and better than ever! The staff were friendly and food was Amazing! I ordered the half rack rib plate and the ribs were THICC and juicy. I couldn't decide which of the 8 bbq sauces to get so I bought extra for $0.50 each to try three of them (Original was my favorite). If dining in they have a nice open and clean dinning area. I saw online on sunday kids eat free with an adult plate so will be back then. So grateful to have an amazing Texas BBQ place on the west side again!

This has to has to be the last time I order from here. I understand that policies change, management changes, menu items change, but certain things is just a no go imo. They used to actually give large sides when you order the large meal packs, there were a lot more options before. They used to give you as much sauce as you wanted, now they give you one, and charge you for the rest. The sauce that we got was nasty, it just tastes like cinnamon or something, it doesn't taste like BBQ sauce at all. The meats are fine, they're not hot, but what can you do when ordering out. They forgot my Texas toast, the sides say it's supposed to be large, but they came very small. Also assorted chips as a side, is ONE BAG, ONE SMALL BAG!! 😡 The Mac and cheese is fine, the fries taste good, but they're cold. Overall I'm very disappointed by how the quality of their service has dropped, especially how expensive everything is. I understand inflation and all that jazz, which is why I still attempted to order from here, but I honestly think this is the absolute last time. If you want brisket go to Ala Moana.
