Zippy's - Honolulu (Mokauea St)
About
A Local Staple in the Heart of Kalihi
When you find yourself navigating the industrial buzz of the Mokauea corridor in Honolulu, the familiar golden sign of Zippy's serves as a reliable beacon. This location carries the specific energy of a true neighborhood hub—where the line between construction crews, office workers, and local families blurs over shared plates of island comfort food.
The Chili Legacy
You cannot talk about this menu without addressing the legendary Zippy’s chili. It is a thick, savory staple that defines the local palate, often served over a bed of rice or as a 'Zip Pac' combination. The kitchen keeps a steady rhythm, churning out bento boxes and hearty breakfast platters that have defined Hawaiian quick-service dining for decades. If you enjoy the contrast of crunchy fried chicken paired with their signature sweet-and-spicy chili, this is your home base.
The Kalihi Dining Experience
Stepping inside, expect the quintessential Zippy’s layout: a mix of counter service for those on the move and a dedicated dining room for those wanting to sit with a newspaper. The atmosphere is unpretentious and loud in a way that feels productive; it is the sound of clinking silverware and orders being called out. Keep in mind that the parking lot can get remarkably tight during the busy lunch hour, requiring a bit of patience as you navigate the flow of trucks and compact cars maneuvering near the entrance.
It remains an essential stop for anyone wanting an authentic, no-frills taste of Oʻahu culinary culture. Whether you are grabbing a quick morning coffee or a late-night plate of saimin, the Mokauea outpost delivers the consistent flavors that have made the brand a household name across the islands.

Called the restaurant spoke to two person they just hang up on me when I just making statements that the extra $6 they charge me is crazy expensive for a fried rice that just only soy sauce and probably 3-4 diced of bacon on it. When you charge at least make it worth of what we pay, you guys are ripping us off. Trained your staff how to handle this kind of situation instead of just keep hanging up the phone it pisses me even more….Ridiculous experience!

Food: Korean fried chicken with chili combo is flavorful and filling. Saimen noodles definitely hit the spot during a cold and windy day. I also recommend you get their fruit punch because it's different than what you get in the mainland. Service: fast and friendly staff, didn't have to wait that long to get my big order. Atmosphere: a homey vibe with a bakery stand on the side of the restaurant.

Stopped by Zippy’s right after landing in Hawaii and it was the perfect first meal! The chicken katsu and loco moco were delicious, and the mac salad was so good. Great spot for a quick, satisfying bite, especially late at night.
