Zippy's - Honolulu (Waialae Ave)
About
A Taste of Island Comfort in Kahala
Stepping into Zippy's near the Kahala Mall feels like returning to a familiar living room. For decades, this Hawaii-born chain has served as the unofficial dining room for residents across Honolulu. The atmosphere here is unapologetically casual, defined by the clatter of silverware against ceramic plates and the rhythmic hum of local conversation that fills the dining area.
Signature Staples and Local Favorites
The menu is anchored by the legendary Chili—a complex, secret-recipe stew that has maintained a cult-like following for generations. Whether you order it as a bowl, over rice, or smothered onto a Zip Pac, the savory aroma is an immediate mood lifter. The kitchen turns out consistent, hearty portions of plate lunches that define local comfort food. From the crispy Fried Chicken to the moist, savory Beef Stew, the focus remains on reliability and depth of flavor rather than culinary pretense.
The Neighborhood Experience
Positioned conveniently within the Kahala corridor, this location serves as a go-to for shoppers and nearby residents seeking a quick yet satisfying meal. It is the kind of place where you might find a group of friends sharing a late-night snack alongside families enjoying a weekend breakfast. While the parking lot can get particularly cramped during peak lunch hours, the trade-off is the efficiency of the service. You aren't here for white-tablecloth treatment; you are here for a steaming bowl of saimin or a quick pastry from the Napoleon's Bakery counter that shares the space. It is a quintessential slice of Honolulu life, capturing the straightforward, hospitable spirit of the islands one plate at a time.

Chicken katsu was fried perfectly. Sauce was super good with a bit more zing and less sweetness. Also had a cream filled long John that was super good. Prices were good for the quantity of food we got.

The Korean Fried Chicken was good but a bit over sauced than other Zippy's restaurants. Three original chicken is better here.

I've been eating at this particular Zippy's for over ten years. The food quality has really fallen recently. I think the hamburger I received for dinner was the worst hamburger I have ever eaten. Burnt black, dry, leathery. Truly awful. On the plus side, the chili is still great

Sushi was great. Salmon skin roll slapped. Perfect rice and a lovely mixture of salty and crunchy. Siam was kind of bland. It’s my first time trying it so I had no expectations but was flavorless. Noodles have a strong egg after taste

Venerable legit place to score late night saimin and won ton min. Chili is also legendary. Lots of bench seating, and easy parking. There’s a Kahala Sushi pop-up in the corner of the restaurant. Highly recommended and will be back soon.

If you’re in Honolulu and craving comfort food with a local twist, Zippy’s in Kahala is a solid choice. Known for blending American, Asian, and Hawaiian favorites, it’s a casual spot that’s great for a quick and satisfying meal. Video Review will be posted on Tik Tok and Instagram soon @Foxyappetite In depth review: I recently stopped by and ordered the Korean Fried Chicken with Chili. The chicken itself was crispy, juicy, and coated in a deliciously sweet and savory glaze. The chili that came with it had good flavor, though there was an issue with the temperature. My portion was a bit too cool, which took away from the overall experience. On the other hand, my best friend’s dish came out with the chili scalding hot—almost too hot to eat. It was as if I got the last bit of a batch that had cooled down, while my friend got the fresh batch. While the flavor of the chili was still great, the inconsistency in temperature was a bit off-putting. Service was quick, and though the atmosphere is basic, the staff was friendly and efficient. I went around dinner time , so there was no wait. In addition to the Korean Fried Chicken, Zippy’s menu features a solid variety of comfort food options. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. Pros: • The Korean Fried Chicken is crispy and flavorful with a great glaze. • The chili adds nice flavor (when it’s at the right temperature). • Quick service and a convenient location in Kahala. • Reasonable prices with generous portions. Cons: • Inconsistent temperature of the chili (mine was a bit too cool, my friend’s was scalding). • The atmosphere is simple and can get crowded during peak hours.

We've been going to this location since it was built. Blockbuster Video was across the street on the other side of the freeway. Shell gas station was also there. A little bit of nostalgia. We lived in the neighborhood so it was a nice stroll to the restaurant. Every Friday evening we had dinner there. The wait to get seated was always prompt. My favorite was a Wonton Min or Curry Katsu Saimin and my wife loved the Chicken Katsu plate. Dessert was always Pineapple sundae. And coffee to finish.

Good casual Hawaiian fare. Essentially a Hawaiian version of a east coast diner, where everything you can think of is available to order. From noodle soups, burgers, local Hawaiian, pastries and even spaghetti bolognese, they have it all. I pretty much made sure I kept it local, I just missed out on the moco loco, next time tho. All in all it was delicious food and it didn’t break the bank either. They even had a solid version of an orange Julius which I haven’t had in years. 😂

Would definitely recommend this. Unsure as to why it’s only ever locals here! Food was amazing, service is good, nice sized parking area. Perfect spot to have lunch, better for lunch than dinner.
