Yakitori Hachibei
About
A Slice of Fukuoka in the Heart of Waikiki
Stepping into Yakitori Hachibei feels less like a typical Honolulu dinner and more like ducking into a high-energy izakaya in Fukuoka. The air carries the sharp, savory scent of binchotan charcoal, a signature element that defines their authentic approach to Kushiyaki. Unlike the heavily glazed skewers found in run-of-the-mill joints, here the focus is on the precision of the flame and the quality of the ingredients.
The Art of the Skewer
The culinary philosophy centers on Hakata-style yakitori, where the chef’s mastery of heat transforms simple proteins into complex bites. The pork belly skewers, or butabara, arrive with a crisp, salted exterior that yields to a tender, juicy center. You will notice the rhythmic clatter of skewers hitting the grill and the hushed, focused movements of the kitchen staff as they rotate each piece with surgical intensity. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate the communal, drink-heavy culture of Japanese nightlife, though be prepared to lean in; the space is intimate, and the conversation among diners can rise as the sake flows.
Refined Izakaya Dining
Beyond the grill, the menu features thoughtful side dishes that balance the smoky profile of the meats. While you might find yourself navigating a tight seating arrangement during peak Friday nights, the brisk service keeps the rhythm moving. This isn't a place for a quiet, white-tablecloth experience; it is a destination for friends looking to share a variety of plates, from seasonal vegetable skewers to perfectly seasoned chicken parts, all paired with a cold draft or a curated pour of shochu. Whether you are a local seeking a genuine taste of Japan or a visitor wandering through Honolulu, Yakitori Hachibei offers a tactile, flavorful escape from the standard tourist fare.

We went when they first opened and it was empty. Service was great and food taste was very unique and delicious. You go through a wave of flavors that hit the pallet well. Suntory biru was great too. Happy hour was amazing!

We visited Yakitori Hachibei last night and decided to try the 11 course Omakase for each of us. The set came with a variety of appetizers, yakitori, an entrée, and dessert, giving us a full experience of their menu. The atmosphere was wonderful, warm, welcoming, and lively. The staff was very attentive and friendly, which really elevated the dining experience. Since we arrived earlier in the evening, we were able to get seated without a reservation, but as the night went on, we noticed couples being turned away once the restaurant filled up. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you plan to come later. Walking in, you immediately notice the grill and the smokiness in the air, which carries into the food. Some dishes were hits for us, especially the scallops, wagyu, and chicken skewers, which were flavorful and tender. However, a few items did not land for our taste, like the mochi skewers, the tsukune (chicken meatball), and the rice dish, which reminded me of onigiri but was not my favorite. Overall, while we appreciated the smoky flavor and enjoyed parts of the meal, not every dish matched our taste preferences. Still, the atmosphere and service make it worth trying at least once, especially if you enjoy yakitori in a cozy, authentic setting.

An unforgettable dining experience! Yakitori Hachibei is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic and incredibly delicious Japanese cuisine. We opted for the omakase and were blown away by every single dish. The star of the show, however, was the Wagyu, which was absolutely phenomenal perfectly cooked and meltingly tender with a rich, incredible flavor. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. This is truly an outstanding restaurant that delivers an amazing culinary journey.

The best Yakitori in town. The Chicken meatball is the favorite for me and my husband. It was my first time to have the Lemond Chu-Hi and it is really good. My toddler baby has the Cream Cheese Tofu and she loves it. The host is very welcoming and very polite. Always the go to place for my special occasion.

No complaints, other than that it's small and you have to reserve a week in advance! All of our food was prepared and cooked perfectly. Living 2 years in Japan, it's extremely authentic and a great addition to the area. Best yakitori we've found so far. It is pricy, though, but for the quality and service (everything came out quickly, the chefs converse with you, and servers were on top of orders and drinks), it really is a good deal. We did the Omakase and added a wagyu and scallop skewer since there was no beef or seafood included in the set menu. So glad we did that, $78 is a great price for the omakase, and we got a little of everything.

Yakitori Hechibei was incredible! The staff was welcoming, the service was excellent, and the food, absolutely delicious. Truly authentic yakitori that exceeded our expectations. We chose the $50 course menu and every dish was amazing. I’d come back…..tomorrow lol.

I've been wanting to go to a Japanese Yakitori place for a while and came across a review of this place on IG. I work in downtown so it was a quick walk for me. We ordered the omakase and a few additional dishes. Everything was cooked to perfection and we truly enjoyed the food here. The staff was friendly and attentive. The happy hour prices are great but we just missed out on that. I will definitely come back next time.

The atmosphere and the service is great; friendly wait staff and prompt seating and service. The food took a little longer than I'd like, and when it finally came we weren't thrilled with it. No soda. And the drinks are small. I included a pic of the 8 oz cup of Mocktail Lychee sparkle. Mostly Ice, for 8 bucks. I sent the Yamaimo back, thinking that it was served traditionally, grated and steamed. Instead they do it fried. Yuck. A starchy earthy mess. Disappointed to say the least. Beef Tongue and chicken Karaage salty. Shiso Butabara Yummy. All very over priced for serving size.

Beef tongue was good! The pork belly wasn’t as charred as I was hoping. Didn’t really understand the complimentary salad with just peeled cabbages and yuzu shoyu…server wasn’t very attentive, overall I would say the quality is less than the price tag. Good atmosphere in the restaurant.

I've been meaning to come here for a while as I heard good things and it did not disappoint. The quality bar here is high. But that also means it takes a while for them to bring the food out. You have 90 minutes here to finish eating but it took around 45 minutes for the first order to come out. Then they ask you for the final order soon and so our whole experience felt rushed and unfinished despite lasting a while, if that makes sense. Their food is yummy though! Also parking here is tricky, as downtown Honolulu street parking tends to be. Enjoy!
