A Slice of Tokyo in Waikiki

Stepping into Yakiniku Tawashi feels less like a typical Honolulu dinner and more like ducking into a high-end back-alley joint in Shinjuku. The air is thick with the savory, charcoal-kissed scent of searing beef, and the low-hanging industrial lights cast a warm glow over the intimate communal tables. If you are looking for a spot that prioritizes the integrity of the cut over flashy decor, this is your destination.

The Art of the Sear

This establishment leans heavily into the Japanese tradition of wagyu craftsmanship. The menu centers on premium marbled cuts that practically melt upon contact with the tabletop grill. Patrons often rave about the kalbi and tongue, which arrive thinly sliced and ready for a quick flash-sear. Don’t expect a massive buffet here; the focus is entirely on the quality of the livestock and the precision of the marinade.

Notes for the Hungry Traveler

The space is compact, which contributes to the buzzy, high-energy atmosphere as the night progresses. Expect the sound of sizzling fat and clinking glasses to rise as the evening hits its stride. One minor observation: because the ventilation is kept efficient to handle all those tabletop grills, it can get a bit chilly inside, so a light layer is recommended. For those traversing the Waikiki area, it serves as an excellent departure from the standard tourist-heavy seafood menus found elsewhere in the city.

Perfect For

This is an ideal pick for small groups of friends or couples who enjoy interactive dining. It’s a place meant for slow, thoughtful eating—where the conversation flows as easily as the sake. Come prepared to cook at your own pace and enjoy the simple, refined pleasure of high-grade, fire-grilled protein.

Just writing so people are aware but they don’t take walk-ins and since they don’t have a website and don’t mention anywhere on their Instagram that you need a reservation to eat there… now you know 🤷🏻‍♀️ …

We had an amazing first-time experience at the Yakiniku restaurant. The boneless short rib was absolutely delicious, and the service was exceptional. Our server, a guys w/glasses , was incredibly friendly and provided outstanding service. While the wagyu was okay, I must say that the kalbi stole the show—it's the best! I highly recommend this place.

Yakiniku Tawashi is one of the best yakiniku places in Hawaii. The level of meat quality is just excellent and the seasoning of each yakiniku is marbled to perfection. The menu is very simple and everything on the menu is absolutely delicious in every way. The most of the meat kalbi and skirt steak can be ordered tare version (house made umami sauce) or salted version (simple). Both versions are absolutely beautiful and I love the tare version with the white rice they have to offer. The meat is thin to keep it perfect bite with right amount of juice in each meat. One of my favorite is also the Horumon, which is large beef intestine. Its absolutely beautiful with right amount of fat and umami taste. I like both the miso and the salt version. I really enjoy every time I dine, so I always order Horumon at the end to finish my meal. The one of the best is the cold noodle soup which has very elegant and subtle taste. I love the ginger and natural umami flavor of the cold noodle soup. I always try to order this to finish my meal with the Horumon or Kalbi Ribs. This is one of my new favorite places to dine in Hawaii and its absolute blessing to have such a beautifully executed Yakiniku place in Oahu. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who is looking to have the best Yakiniku experiences.
